Gaiascope — I Wasn't Prepared For This

Description Am I the only who thought it was kinda weird Twilight could use dark magic after seeing it once without consequences? Somehow I feel that magic is something inherent to King Sombra. I think he would be more than happy to add the Element of Magic to his arsenal, hmm?

Also jeebs, this is my most ambitious work to date. So much time went into it. And the background. Oh my god. I can't even. Just. Take it. I'm done with it.

I completely agree with you. I did find it weird that the dark magic didn't corrupt her when she used it. There didn't seem to be any consequences for using that sort of magic. Then again, when Twilight used dark magic on the troll door, it showed Twilight's worst fear. After watching what took place in her mind, she realized that using King Sombra's power meant more pain and suffering to her and those around her. Which allowed her to use her own "good" magic to open the door, and succeed. I guess that's how I interpret it after watching the episode and really thinking about it.

I for one would notmind in the slightest if they decided to make the show darker like this.

For example, Twilight's use of dark magic could be a very good storyline in and of itself. She could be put into situations in the upcoming season where she has to use it more and more, making sure never to let her friends or Celestia find out she's doing it, arguing that it's all for the greater good anyway so what's the problem?

Slowly, as the episodes progress, she becomes more dependant on it, as it slowly corrupts her, makes her angry and less willing to spend tiem with her friends. Eventually, it twists her into something as harsh and dark as Sombra himself had become.

Now her friends must unite to face their worst challenge yet, having to fight their dearest friend Twilight. And Twilight's true self, the loving and kind mare, must break free of ther dark influence that now controls her actions before it's tool late for all of them.

A bit grim I know, but I truly feel this has the potential for some great drama and character development.

confused yet? I could continue on with light, elemental, and psychic type magics.

Well, I mean, Celestia I can understand. As an Alicorn, I imagine her control over magic to be immense and she had a practically infinite window of time to study it, not even mentioning her purity keeping her safe from corruption. But Twilight? I know she is the Element of Magic, but she's also a mortal attempting new and potentially very dangerous magic after seeing it ONCE. Just saying it could have had some repercussions. A slight headache is all I'm asking to ease my mind.

And a discussion on magic? You're on

I'd be willing to discuss magic. I got nothing better to do.

Well, the Element itself wasn't on her, and it has been proven to be required for the more spectacular feats of magic. Really, both ways are possible. But for some reason I'm a bigger fan of Twilight being subject to some corruption. I blame my sick and twisted mind.

But really, in the world of MLP, magic is very interesting. The love between Princess Cadence and Shining Armour fed an entire changeling army before utterly destroying it. Discord is the embodiment of chaos and he can alter flipping reality! Arguments between the three tribes plummeted the land into a harsh winter. I'd imagine Sombra, being banished to the shadows, to become connected with it. As in dabbling with his domain will to some extend make you vulnerable to him.

my gosh! I can't believe I forgot Lunar magic! It's a branch of dark that overlaps with light, technically still a dark magic though. Lunar magic is used mainly for seeing in the dark or other practical things but can also be used as a sort of energy source. Lunar magic users can, not really heal, but lend power to others. It overlaps with light because of its lending abilities and such. Therefore it cannot corrupt you. Not what Twilight was using but still. Also the EMP kinda killed Sombra, didn't it?

I suppose so but still, like most magic artifacts there'd be a sort of magic residue left over from exposure to it. While not very powerful it could still harm or benefit the user. That's basically what curses are, magic residue. Magic residue from the element could be enough to counteract the corruption of the dark magic and ultimately prevent Sombra from being able to influence Twilight.
Heh, I really doubt the people in charge of writing this episode go into as much detail as we are currently. If one of them saw this conversation they'd probably be amused at how much we're over analyzing this.

Well there's also the element. Can't believe I forgot that. The element is made of what? Pure magic? I don't know. Whatever the case it is still an extremely powerful magic artifact that could act as a buffer to magical backlash. I'm not trying to say you're wrong, I'm just trying to make sense of this myself and I think better when arguing on the computer.

I'm pretty sure the magic in MLP is driven by emotion. I mean, their most powerful magic is the Elements of Harmony, and the Crystal Heart is powered by peace and love.

I don't think it's a big leap to believe Dark Magic is powered by the inverse of what powers "normal" magic. When it comes to emotion magic, pretty much every universe has the dark portion of it being dangerously corruptive. We even have an IU example: Luna became jealous, jealousy takes over her magic, she becomes the wicked Nightmare Moon.

true but the mane six have often been jealous or angry and such to no effect on them. Discord reversed their personalities making the elements useless but it was not permanent. Emotion makes up only most of the magic's power. You also have to factor in that changelings can use magic even though they do not "feel" emotion. Yes they feed off emotion but they need the emotion to power themselves along with the magic, so there has to be other sources of said magic otherwise they would not be able to use magic. Also the energy field that appears around the horn during spell casting is most likely a weaker form of pure energy. So magic most likely derives from emotion and energy.

Well you aren't taking into account the KIND of dark magic that is being used. From what I've seen and what is most logical to me there are several different kinds. Dark magic that you learn by seeing would probably have little to no effect on the user while using ancient dark magics could have unknown effects. The ancient magic could have had years to putrefy and corrupt the user. Then there's also the less commonly referred to magic, shadow magic. Shadow magic drains the users sanity. It could make you go crazy very quickly or over a long period of time depending on the entity using said magic. Keep in mind this is all my own opinion and is in no way a fact. All details are from things I have read/seen over the years so I could be completely wrong here. It's just what makes the most sense to me.
