Description With a soft yawn and a stretch, Merri the Paras awoke in her small bed, blinking the sleep from her eyes. As she stepped out of her nest-bed, Merri noticed that neither of her adoptive uncles where in the bedroom. Merri crept to the bedroom door and slowly opened it, revealing that the main room of the house was just as vacant. Looking around to see if Riley or Morris had left a note for her, Merri began noticing some sound coming from Riley’s workshop, adjacent to the bedroom. Just as her eyes fell upon the door to the workshop the door swung open and Riley came walking out with a bag over his shoulders.

“Oh there you are, Uncle Riley!” Merri greeted him, walking over to his side as the Scraggy took some Oran Berries out of a cupboard to give to her. “Were you up early to finish your projects? And where did Uncle Morris go?”

“I was finishing my projects, in fact. And Morris left to go help with the translating of that book we got from Arianna’s Library. Morris said that there was something about the words that was familiar to him, but wasn’t sure what he meant.” Riley took out another berry for himself to eat as he spoke, while Merri kept chomping away at hers. Once she was finished, Merri hopped up onto the dinner table and leapt onto Riley’s back, snuggling herself into the Scraggy’s hood.

“Well, let’s to get him!” Merri said as she leaned on Riley’s shoulder. “We need to do our gift shopping for Mister Sorbet’s party, and I know who I’m getting one for!” Riley nodded in agreement, and once done with breakfast the pair headed out the door to the Merchant’s Hall.

ONE SHORT WALK LATER

Shortly after Riley and Merri arrived at the village plaza, they were greeted with a very odd sight of the Merchant Leaders at the Item Shop. While it wasn’t that they were manning the shop that was odd, but that there was a sign near the shop that said, “25% off sale! Limited time offer!” PK having a sale at such a steep price knock off? Were Tepigs flying?

“Welcome to the Tao Village Item Shop, how can I help you?” PK greeted the pair cheerfully, almost uncharacteristically so. “Oh, you guys are Morris’s teammates, right? Riley and Merri?”

“Yeah, that’s us.” Riley said as he looked past the leaders to try and find his partner. “Where is he by the way? I thought Morris said that he was going to help you translate that book about Kyurem.”

“Sorbet!” PK and Merri corrected him, as Shroomsworth spoke up, “We were in another session today, but it seems that with all the hustle and bustle about setting up Kyu—Sorbet’s party, that Miss PK and I forgot to set up a morning shift schedule for today. Fortunately, there will be a team coming later today to man the shop, but until then, we will be doing the honors and all that rot. Mr. Morris figured he’d keep at it with the translation until we returned.”

“Well, that’s too bad.” Riley sighed, leaning on his elbows on the shop’s counter. “Merri and I were hoping to see if he would like to help select some gifts for the party…” Just then, seemingly out of the blue, a gust of wind rushed past Riley and Merri, nearly knocking the two over if it were not for Riley catching the edge of the shop counter.

“Did someone say gifts?!” Jerking his head, Riley saw that Morris had appeared beside him in front o the shop, where there was just empty space before. Everyone there was baffled on how Morris not only seemed to hear the conversation from within the Hall, but also dash to Riley’s side in less than an instance.

“What…how…?” Shroomsworth stammered, trying to make sense of it all, as PK addressed the Golett, “Yeah, Riley here said he was going to pick out some gifts for Sorbet’s party later. Since you’re already out here, you might as well take the day off from the translating to help him out and take them to the Spinda Café where the party’s taking place. Someone setting up decorations should be able to tell you where to put them.”

“Will do!” Morris said with a salute. Looking at the selection of items before him, Morris thought aloud, “Who’re we shopping for, and what should we get them?” From Riley’s back, Merri spoke up loud and clear.

“I wanna get something for Lunch and her brother!” Merri smiled proudly at her proclamation, though the others were simply left confused.

“Lunch and her…” Riley muttered, repeating Merri’s words to try and make sense of them. After a moment of thinking, an idea pass through his head, “Oh do you mean Ligray and Rigley?” As Merri nodded to confirm his thought, Riley smiled back at her. “I think that’s a great idea, Merri!”

“I don’t understand how you are able to say Liggy and Riggle without you tang getting tongueled.” Morris stated, and then noticing that he had messed up on the names. “Darn it, it happened again!” Ignoring the silly Golett, Shroomsworth and PK just noticed the small bag that Riley had been carrying with him.

“If I may be so bold to ask, Mr. Riley,” the cultured Breloom asked, pointing a red finger at Riley’s bag, “But exactly are the content of your parcel there?” As Riley and Shroomsworth spoke, Merri jumped off of Riley’s back and onto Morris’s head, and the two discussed what to buy as PK gave her suggestions to them.

“Oh this?” Riley asked, holding up the bag, “Some things I made as gift for you, Miss PK, and the other Guild Leaders. If you want, I can give you yours now…”

“Oh no need, Mr. Riley.” Shroomsworth said, waving his hand dismissively. “It would be far more fitting if you were to present them to us before our little meeting with the other Guild Leaders starts later today. Miss PK and I will be going to the Café to talk about the decorations and organization for the party with Mike, Gunpowder, and Devonshire, so you can use that opportunity to give us all our gifts at once, rather than hunt us down individually.”

“Thanks for the idea, Mr. Shroomsworth.” Riley said, bowing his head in respect.

“We’re done with the shopping!” Morris and Merri exclaimed in unison, causing Riley to jump a foot out of his pants-skin. “We something for the Elgyems, Team Pecha and the Nighty Knights!”

“Wha--? Already?!” Riley said in shock, turning to see Morris carrying five small, gift-wrapped boxes in his arms, each tied with a different colored bow.

“Yeppers, we did!” Morris said, with Merri pointing to each of the gifts, “The green one’s for the Elgyem sibs, the pink one’s for Amy, the yellow one’s for Chikorita, the red one’s for Bisharp, and the blue one’s has both Ralts and Lipless’ gifts in it. Don’t worry, PK helped us pick them out!” Looking over at the purple Kecleon, Riley saw that she was busy counting out a large stack of Poke-bills, giggling like a mad woman to herself.

“Yeah, I’m sure she was very…helpful.” Riley mumbled while scratching the back of his head. “Anyway, we should take the gifts you two picked out to the Café. While we’re there, we could see if they need any help with decorations before the Guild Leaders meet up.” Morris and Merri nodded in approval, and the three of them set off through the snowy plaza towards the Spinda Café, leaving Shroomsworth and PK to watch the shop.

AT THE SPINDA CAFÉ

Upon arriving to the underground café, Team Handy saw that many teams from around Tao Village were already hard at work getting decorations up in time for the party celebration. Taking up the majority of the café’s stage was a humongous mountain of presents and gifts, each wrapped up in different arrays of color. Many winged Pokémon were draping lights and tinsel around the rafters above them while others were setting up forest greens around the tables and counters. The entire place was bustling, but even then it seemed like help was needed.

Riley and Morris barely got two feet into the café before being called over by the owner, Vertigo. It seemed that there have been some loose and outright broken furniture in the back that needed fixing before the party, and Vertigo had heard about Riley’s skilled hands at the craft.

“Morris, just set the gifts over there on that table until we’re done, then we’ll put them with the others.” Riley said to his Golett partner as he followed Vertigo into the back storage. Riley pulled out a hammer and screwdriver from his pants-skins while Vertigo closed the door behind them so as not to be disturbed while Riley was fixing the furniture.

Meanwhile, Morris and Merri went to work with some of the decorations not yet set up, such as placing ornaments on a large evergreen brought in from Tao Forest, and setting up circles made of pine branches along the walls. Eventually, Merri was called upon to even help place small clumps of leaves and berries called ‘Mistletoe’ across various parts of the ceiling.

As Merri was preparing to place the last of the mistletoe on the rafters, Riley walked out of the storage room carrying a pair of chairs under each arm. There were a few more pieces of furniture left in the room, but Riley couldn’t carry them all out in one go. Setting the chairs down at an empty table, he looked around noticing that Merri wasn’t anywhere in sight.

“Hey, where’s Merri?” he asked Morris, who returned to their table for a short break. Morris scanned the Café for Merri and up among the rafters, before finally spotting her a ways above them.

“Up here, Uncle Riley!” Merri called down, waving the mistletoe in her claws.

“Wah! Merri be careful up there!” Riley shouted, practically jumping underneath her to catch her if she fell.

“I am careful!” Merri said, leaning down to hang the last mistletoe to rafter, “Just need to place this last mistletoe…and…there!” Staring up from below, Morris gaze drifted from one mistletoe to the next with a puzzled look in his eyes.

“What exactly is mistletoe? Why do we hang it up everywhere?” He asked while scratching his head. Riley then explained to him that there was an old tradition concerning the mistletoe; any two Pokémon that find themselves under a mistletoe are expected to kiss each other, whither for good luck or to avoid bad luck Riley couldn’t remember. After the explanation, Morris just looked at Riley with a blank expression, “You’re making that up. Why would anyone make such a gross tradition like that?”

“LUNCH!” Merri shouted, leaping off the rafter towards her target below. Poor Ligray barely had enough time to register the attack and look up before Merri landed on her head and began Leeching the Life out of her cranium.

“AAAH! The Parasite! It’s an ambush!” Ligray cried, flailing her arms widely as she flew around the room in an attempt to buck Merri off of her. Rigley followed in close pursuit, determined to save his sister from the parasitic abomination while at the same time fearing Merri would turn to him next. The others just couldn’t decide if they should help or not, so Riley thought it was best to focus their attention elsewhere.

“Hey we guys helping out with the decorations?” Riley asked the girls of Pecha Berry House, plus Bisharp.

“We were going to, but…” said Amy, her gaze drifting the Elgyems and Merri, “it looks like we’re going to have to wait until those two settle down first.”

“Well while we wait, we got presents for you guys!” Grabbing up the gifts from the table, Morris handed them out one by one. Deciding that they may as well open the present now while they had the time, the residents of Pecha Berry House dove in and un-wrapped their gifts, as Morris began explaining each one in full.

“First off for Amy; we got her a light book to read: the first book of the Encyclopedia Abra series! A perfect collection of mysteries and crime to solve in the comfort of your own home!”

“Next is Chikorita; for her a complete box-set of 64 crayons! We heard your old ones were wearing thin and decided that you needed a new set to continue your artistic hobbies!”

“Then we come to Ralts and Lipless’s gifts; plushies for the both of them! The adorable and popular Teddiursa plushie for Ralts and the oh-so cute Azurill plushie for Lipless! The cuteness is almost unbearable!”

“And finally we have Bisharp…..uh, we couldn’t think of anything to get you, so we got you a sharpening stone! A perfect way to keep the sharp in Bisharp!”

“Oh these are wonderful! You shouldn’t have!” exclaimed Chikorita as she opened her new box of crayons. The box was brand new and unused, with the tips of each crayon nice and sharp for precision drawing. Amy was equally estatic, as she was looking for new material to help her learn to read. Ralts and Lipless simple giggled in barely contained joy, squeezing their new toys for all their worth.

“I got a rock…” grumbled Bisharp as he weighed the sharpening stone in his hand. Sure it was a practical gift and he needed to keep his body blades in good condition but still, a rock? His mumblings went unheard however and nobody seemed to notice.

“Aw, it was nothing! Think nothing of it.” Morris replied to Amy, just as Ligray and Merri flew past them. As they pasted, Merri released her gnawing grip from Ligray long enough to add to Morris’s statement.

“Yeah! ‘Cuz friendship is the gist that keeps on giving!” She said with a broad grin. But with her finally letting go of Ligray’s head with her teeth, it gave the Elgyem the opening she needed to finally thrown Merri off of her head and to the ground.

“Enough of this!” Ligray shouted, waving an arm furiously at Merri “I’ve had it up to here with all your--!” Before Ligray could finish her sentence, Merri grabbed up the final present and thrust it in Ligray’s face, smiling proudly as she did so. Around this time, Rigley finally caught up to them and was just as curious as his sister about the gift.

“For you and your brother!” Merri grinned, holding the green-bowed gift out in front of her until Ligray hesitantly took it from her. With Rigley’s help, the two Elgyems untied the bow and opened the box, revealing a strange cone shaped object with a glass body with what appeared to be some sort of gooey substance inside.

“What is it?” Rigley asked, turning the cone-shaped object around in the air with his Psychic powers.

“It’s a lava lamp, silly!” Merri replied, which only served to confuse the Elgyems even further. There was lava in there? Seeing their confusion, Merri crawled over and taped the side of the lamp where the On/Off switch was located. “Watch, you turn it on and…” Turning on the self-powering lamp, the substance inside began to glow a bright green, and the blobs started floating up and down in random fashion. The Elgyems were completely enthralled by the mesmerizing light and hypnotizing motion of the little green blobs.

As those three gazed at the green lava lamp, Riley noticed that the Guild Leaders were beginning to assemble at a table not far from where he and the others were. Remembering the sack that he had brought with him containing his project, Riley picked it up and started to head towards the Leaders.

“I’ll be right back you guys.” He said over his shoulder, pointing towards his destination, “And don’t tell Merri that she and Rigley are under a mistletoe!”

“Ah, Mr. Riley I was wondering if you remembered.” Greeted Shroomsworth, acknowledging Riley’s presence as the Scrafty approached the table. To the other Gunpowder, Devonshire and Mike, he said, “Before we begin, Riley here had informed me earlier that he had something to give to each of us, and I reasoned that we may as well receive these gifts at once. Mr. Riley, if you would be so kind?” Nodding, Riley placed his bag upon the Guild Leader’s table and reached inside for the gifts he was to present. He took out each one by one, placing them in front of each Leader in attendance.

Before each Leader stood a six inch wooden replica of themselves, each detailed to the finest degree, set upon a base with writing carve on the side. PK’s replica leaned on a bag of Poke-coins with smug grin and a twinkle of mischief in its eye, if that was possible for a wooden figurine, with the word ‘Peace’ carved on its base. Shroomsworth’s replica stood tall and proud while resting a cane in front of his in a regal manner, with the word ‘Prosperity’ carved on its base. Gunpowder’s replica stood in a threatening stance and a look of sheer intimidation upon its face, with the word ‘Strength’ carved on its base. Devonshire’s replica stood with its hands behind its back, like it was formally addressing a crowd, and Devonshire’s trademark smile upon its face, with the word ‘Ideals’ carved on its base. Finally, Mike’s replica stood with one foot perched on a rock while tipping its hat in a heroic fashion, with the word ‘Courage’ carved on its base.

“I was going to make one for Chill,” Riley explained, rubbing the back of his head sheepishly, “But it’s not quite done yet. I still need to carve ‘Truth’ to the base…”

“Oh my, these certainly are well crafted! Thank you very much!” Shroomsworth said, inspecting his replica in his hands.

“Heh, i-it was nothing r-really.” Riley stuttered a little, his face beginning to turn red from unfamiliar praise. He would have stayed longer to hear the other’s thoughts, but Morris soon called out to him from their table.

“Hey Riley! We’re getting back to the decorations now!” shouted Morris, waving Riley over to them. Riley waved back and turned back to the Leaders to say farewell.

“Excuse me, Guild Leaders.” Riley said with a polite bow before rushing off to help his friends with the day’s decorations. Unseen by the others, Riley had a huge grin upon his face, overjoyed that the Guild Leaders loved and appreciated his hand crafted gifts.

This was turning out to be a wonderful time of year…

On the fifth day of giving, my new friends gave to me...
FIVE HANDY THINGS!
Four fireworks,
Three for Mike,
Two mattresses,
And a flood of a gifting spree!
