Thranduil's wife was given no name by Tolkien, nor a history. In the extended edition of the New Line Cinema films, Legolas reveals that his mother fell defending him from a band of orcs and that this was the reason his father has become so cold and unapproachable. In The Hobbit (bookverse), Thranduil appears wearing a crown of leaves and flowers / berries that changes with the seasons. The different embroidered flowers on Thranduil's wife's gown and laced through their hair have various meanings, and if anyone really wants to know I'll explain.
