Description Caught this rare moment of her in a natural stack while I was taking pictures of a deer head. She moved immediately after, but I'm glad to have finally gotten the pose captured! She doesn't like to stack for me normally XDΒ

It's fear aggression, she's all spiked up and barking like a big dog, but she hides behind/under things most of the time.

We're just making sure everyone that comes gives her a treat so she associates guests as a positive experience, and we give her lots of praise for behaving well around others.

She's usually fine unless someone tries to get too close to my girlfriend and I.

Poor girl do you think it's a breeding, training, or just anΒ individual problem? My golden, for example, came from very well mannered parents, was socialized from a very young age, yet was still aggressive (in a dominant protective way). We've worked with her quite a bit and she's six now, but I still have to keep a close eye on her at shows.

Her mother is the exact same way, so I have no doubt that it's genetics

We've trained her since she was 9 weeks, so it's not us, and because he's so much like her mom, I don't think it's an individual problem.

Gorgeous too! She looked like a really good dog.Β

Riley is bigger then half the males we've come across around my area, so she often gets called "handsome boy" by strangers LOL I'm so partial to GSD's. I keep telling myself I'd die to have another longhaired female. Though I'm really in love with all black shepherds, or even something similar to these beautiful lookers:

Β Β

Maybe one day. I'm hoping possibly if we move to get another dog, still haven't figured out exactly what breed I'd like to go for. I've got so many I love. Right now though it's a bittersweet thought.Β

I feel (so far) the breed is pretty smart. She's already got sit down pretty damn well. Come is something she knows.. she just hasn't figured out it means NOW not when you're done with what you're doing lol. She's a smart little thing. I've only known a few Shepherds so I like to hear opinions of other owners.

My mom was a professional dog trainer, had her own business. She had a major back surgery so she no longer does it but I often helped out at the dog classes she co-ran. I know just about as much as her (you've got to know something when you own more than one Border Collie XD)

lol, the ones I have had had common sense but if something was too simple they didn't understand lol. I love them so much but the husband didn't want another Border this time so after much argument over which breed we settled on a german shepherd and found Silly

galianogangster In reply to EncounterEthereal [2014-02-09 02:52:14 +0000 UTC]

We wanted a Tervuren. The only ones we could find were either not papered, or they were WAY out of our price range. I will get another Border some time in my life. Domino is probably the best dog I've ever had.

Her ears are placed just a bit further up on her head than normal ears ... also doesn't help that she was the bully of her small litter (only 4 pups). Β I have to say that I absolutely love her to death. Β I was very unsure as we were researching her lines and talking to the breeder and what not, but about a day after we got her home I knew I couldn't be without her.

Aw, I'm excited for you! I love working with GSDs, it's been a long time since I got to. I've been training other breeds in the meantime, but there's nothing like that regal German Shepherd stack I just wish my dog was more sociable, we've been taking her to classes, but she's so terrified when she gets out on the floor with other dogs that we've only been able to do at home training with her. But we drag her along to class so she's exposed to other dogs more. Best of luck to you!

Thanks! Well Ares will have a big brother dog (my Buckshot who is a mutt) and a kitty brother to play with, plus I live at the Vet office I work at, so I can expose him to some of the other tech's dogs. And PetsMart had this awesome packet thing for $20 that had 2 free doggie day camp things AND a free puppy orientation thing, so he is going to get a LOT of exposure starting out.

From everything I read, you need to keep socializing GSDs...so we have a lot planned for him to be a good all around boy. Not sure how big he will get. The breeder says because of his size he may not quite reach 50 lbs...but she also said that about Buckshot when he was a pup and he reached 80...

Any advice and tips are appreciated this way!!! My dad had a GSD a long time ago and he said they can be a handful sometimes.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

galianogangster In reply to cheddarbug [2014-02-08 20:42:11 +0000 UTC]

Yep, the main thing is to keep socializing them with as diverse of people, animals, and situations as you can! They can go through various stages of dominance/agression throughout the first years of life, but you need to just keep making sure he knows that you're the boss. Β Always praise him when he's a good boy, even if it's only because he's around people or dogs and not being a bother. If he gets iffy with people outside the group he's normally with, have people give him treats when they come to the door. Eventually he'll learn that it's okay and not every person is out to hurt you. Β

I have a smaller GSD, and she was tiny and stocky when we got her XDΒ

If you have more specific questions regarding the breed or training in any specific area, just let me know ^ ^
