Description Here is the black and white version my Secretariat statue picture. A color version would have been nice, but my lack of skills led to washed out highlights on the side of the pedestal. If I bring out the colors it will be pure white. So I tried another technique: filters. A green filter applied in photoshop lightened the greens and darkened the reds, which I wanted since I wanted the red flowers to stand out. It really is interesting to fiddle around with filters, a certain colored filter will lighten it's own color and darken it's complementary (remmember the color wheel ). Just to show that BW photography is more than just desaturating an image. Sorry if image quality is low since this is a scan of a print which was put up on DA and then I resaved on my computer since I do not have the negatives with me.

Since he is really famous there are probably various statues of him through the country. This particular one is located in the paddock of Belmont Park, in Elmont, NY.

I think secretariat was stabled in Kentucky during his final years, there might be a statue of him in that farm. But I can't really remember that name of the farm, but if someday you're around Kentucky you should check it out.

Thanks. I did go with my dad to the KY horse park. They had one of him and his trainer and jocky there but it wasn't the one I was looking for, still trying to figure that one out.LOL. I'll prolly just have to start looking stuff up, and checking around KY for info. Thanks so much.

In wikipedia it says that Secretariat was stabled in Claiborne farms during his last few years and is also buried there. There might be something of interest there too.

Wow, you really know this stuff, thanks for all the info, and for taking the time to find it, it's really helped me. I'm hoping here soon, my family and I can take a few days and go see and visit these places.

Wiki's pretty good, I get a lot a stuff from it. Theres a book from a public library I got...good stuff, very informative, it was where I got the reference pic for the drawing.

Beautiful photo. I love how you have the trees hanging over and framing the statue.

It sure is shiny, isn't it?

You really know how to get to me, don't you? I love this horse. I once practically wallpapered my room with photos of him. His story is timeless, his inspiration great. I was devastated to learn that he had died just months after I was born. I'd give almost anything to see him run and to place a kiss on that velvety muzzle. Awesome shot. This one's def. going into the faves.

Yeah, he was one of a kind. There was a book about secretariat that had the title "The Horse God Built", once I read the title I knew who the book was about

That's one of my favorite sites in the world. For years as a little girl, I always wanted to read what was on the statue (as straightforward as it is). It was only until I went to the Racing Hall of Fame at Saratoga, where they have an exact replica of this statue, did I know what the inscription was. Man, where was this photo 10 years ago? Great photo, has lots of personality. And the B&W suits it just fine.

I love Belmont, but since I don't have a car getting there is a pain, a bunch of buses and like 2 hours, ugh. That long nasty trip ruined my first trip to Belmont, but the place sure is beautiful. Saratoga, that's my next goal. I definately want to check out the museum, hopefully I can go next summer, and since he might be in town I might try to visit Funny Cide. Thank you for the comment .

Well, Secretariat died in 1989 from laminitis, which truly is a shame. He was 19 years old I think. That's what I meant. BTW, thanks for your comment. I have Four favs: Ruffian, Secretariat, Seabiscuit and Funny Cide, can't really say anyone is better than the other for me, well, maybe Funny Cide since I got to see him in person

This is my first try with filters, I just about them in a photography book and their importance in BW photos.
Thanks
