Description A Remake of the original concept drawing for the Volga-Bulgars (Rvier Turks?) Women Warriors in the Historically Wrong Sketch Series: Medieval Revisited, which is roughly based on the Middle ages covering 800 AD to 1400 AD. She represents, as mentioned previously, the Volga Bulgars and other Turkic nomads at their height prior the Mongol Invasion in the 12-13th CE in the western steppe.

DRAWING COMMENTARIES

I have always wanted to mix some emotion into my drawing, but sometimes, the execution is far from perfect. This one is one of those experiment where I want the picture to convey a sense of dread, chaos and grief, the ones which are often associated with War. I guess it's something to add more variety when this, alongside with other drawings, gets published into my first Historically Wrong Sketch Series artbook .

Having said that, in order to convey a dreaded image, Sibel Khanum is depicted with arms and armor of the elite heavy cavalry of the Volga-Bulgars Army, probably somewhere around 12th-13th century prior to the Mongol Invasion. The highly stylized anthropomorphic mask is based on those found in the region like that from Lipovitz belonging to Chernye Klobuki. The actual mask found in Volga-Bulgar territory however, was rather simpler in design unlike the ones excavated belonging to the nearby region which showed excellent craftsmanship. The helmet is speculative, but conical design were perhaps more common in the area. Apart from that, she is depicted with heavy lamellar armor worn over mail as protection, something which was recorded by Arab Traveler to the region (although archaeological findings of lamellar were rarer). On the other hand, her weapon includes a nomad sabre of Turkic design and a flail which was used both as a symbol of status as well as dealing with their heavier armored Slavic opponent.

Her retainer on the right is depicted in similar fashion, using the 12th CE visor helmet from Nikolskoye. As with his mistress, he too is depicted wearing lamellar over mail. The dying soldier on the bottom right corner is drawn based on contemporary depiction of Rus warrior of the 11-13th CE, while the lady next to him is drawn in typical Kievan Rus noblewoman clothing. I have added numerous depictions of people and burned buildings in the background to give a sense of dread and chaos in the picture.

Without having to go further in detail, I hope I get this drawing right, bringing my skill one step closer to that of Angus Mcbride, even if its still a long way ahead.

The Volga is a river in the modern day Russia, Bulgars were Tatar people who lived there, they had their own kingdom and kind of neutrality with Kievan Rus. then they were conquered by Mongols and never heard since.

Brutality of war; very disturbing.
So nailed it, I guess?
Love the little details, as usual.
