Rainkit and her brother Ripplekit were born to Pineclan warriors Smokebelly and Puddleshade. Stormbelly was a very attentive father, but Puddleshade never seemed to take much of an interest in her kits, not paying them much more attention than they needed for survival. Other than their mother's inattentiveness, they had a fairly normal kithood.

The siblings were made apprentices in a timely fashion, though over time it seemed that Rainpaw... Wasn't a very good apprentice. She spent more of her time sniffing out plants than prey, and her mentor, called Raggedclaw. Rainpaw was actually rather afraid of Raggedclaw, but in usual fashion pushed herself to please him. This worried Rippleppaw, but nothing he said could change her mind. Eventually she went too far. While on a patrol she slipped and fell into the river. In her attempts to stay afloat she got her paw stuck under a rock and ended up breaking it. She was soon recovering in the medicine den, and with that she began to pay close attention to the goings on around her. She found herself drawn to the life of a medicine cat, and eventually asked if she could switch her apprenticeship.
