heyo, I'm from the project of the comments! yay...

so I assume you've used copic markers or something there like, the impact of these tools is utterly fantastic. as we all know, copic markers are amazing!
I do like the shading but I feel that its largely inconsistent for example why is the left shoulder so dark but the left side under his chin is relatively light? also the lower half of this image, basically everything from the neck down seems to have lost its charm. the line work is more sloppy and less confident, and the colouring is less consistent and clean. which is starkly noticeable because your line work on his head and face is stunning and wonderfully stylized!

anyway I'm not a big anime fan (to say the very least...) so I had to look up this character to see comparatively how well you captured him and I think its pretty clear you got the character pretty bang on. I would like to mention though.
his jaw/ chin, is way to sharp even for this character. if you draw a line from cheek to cheek under the nose it looks like a dorito...

in terms of the future (bet you've never heard this one before!) I think you should look at anatomical references and not just anime characters, copying and attempting to learn from an already established style wont really assist you in effectively learning or progressing. because if you look at this proportionally well, he's a cartoon character. and theres a sever disconnect between already established styles and the images that attempt to copy them. you need to understand skeletons and REAL head shapes before you divulge from the beaten track and add style and effect.

more notably copic markers can turn an average image into a mind blowing image, make sure to sketch with a pencil or a scratchy pen and no eraser every now and again to test your work and ensure it still looks good without all the icing on it.

still though it was really well done and its an impactful and vibrant image with wonderful technique utilised!

keep it up!

Thank you for the critique .

I'll admit outright I screwed up the left shoulder and knew it the moment I did it.  But, this is a part of a study I am doing on anatomy proportions.  The key section was the face and hair, so I did indeed get sloppy on the rest (a heinous crime I know ).

To be honest, I have been watching many videos that show the colouring done with copics being done in seconds and wanted to see the results of that for myself (it's only my second image done using them ).

While I am not displeased with the overall result, it's certainly not as striking as it would, or should, be if I'd spent as much time elsewhere as I had on the hair!  Other than the shoulder...  That's just...  Yeah.

As for mediums, I love the copics, but primarily I still love using graphite pencils and am going to look at doing solid ink works too .

oh your new to copics too! so am I!

just bought my first set!!!

and look, if you know where your weak points are thats fantastic! easier for you to improve! I hope you do well in the future and its fantastic that you were so humble and understanding of both your flaws and successes!

Heh, currently my flaws are anatomy in its entirety .  I have improved faces but I've a long, long way to go!  But then, 3-4 weeks ago I couldn't even draw a face straight.  When I look at the Ichigo image I put up at the start of december, the level of the eyes pains me lol.

Congrats on the purchase .  It's a painful first step, but it's the first time I've actually been itching to use a new product as soon as I got them.

i know right! i got home and i couldn't even think of doing anything but using them!

and look theres something good about your flaws in anatomy! it gives you an excuse to draw all the time to get better! everybody has a long way to go, i say it too, and thats a good thing, arts about the journey and the destination. how boring would it be to just say "yep one day i woke up and i could draw anything i wanted perfectly" an artists has to struggle to find thier garden bed and really plant thier roots.

and then once your at the destination, you get to look at all the sweet eye candy you can make pretty much whenever you want!

Vision: the vision is very clear and it could show a emotion that between happy and sad, fantastic

Originality: not clear much, what make the art is the eyes and the mixing between the colour. You hide it more than show it

Technique: very good, ypour skill in drawing human are very good but you should fix the nose and if we look clear, the mouth is a little in the left. The eyes are very sharp and the face is prefect

Impact: you shading it very great special at the hair but the left shoulder is too dark and the right shoulder is too bright, the shirt should be a little brighter

YOUR ART ARE AMAZING

Thank you very much for the critique .

I think I know what you mean about hiding it more than showing it.  This was kind of a trial with Copics to see how well the colours blend compared to the cool grey set, so I wasn't 'too' focused on much other than the bright colours or the facial features.

Honestly, I think you are being too generous when you say they are very good .  I have always been terrible at proportions on people, so have been having to force myself to study anatomy.  Spent the last 2-3 weeks on faces alone and only just starting to get my head around it!

I agree with the shoulder.  I hated it the moment I put it down, but once it was done there was no reversing it and I said to myself when I started the study, I will finish and post whatever I do, no matter the result.  That way I can get an accurate chart of where I am improving and where I need more work .

The result is some parts look nice, others look ghastly lol!

This piece is very interesting. I am not sure who the character is but i have seen him before. There are some solid things in the piece and some that need to be worked on.i really like how you did the facial features they look really good, and noses can be a bit tricky. though i think you pulled it off well. Also i love the shading on the hair it looks really good all the different shades of pink blend very well together. I think were you are having some trouble is in the neck and should area. His neck seems to be a bit big compared to his face also your should are really rounded. When your drawing should its always good to angle them up slightly it makes them look more realistic. Also i don't know hat happened but you have all this good shading on the left shoulder what happened to the right.Just try to be a consistent as you can. Though aside all that stuff this is a good piece and i hope that you keep drawing and getting better. you have a lot of potential! Keep up the good work!!

Thank you for your critique .

Hunter x Hunter is certainly something I'd recommend if you're a fan of anime and Hisoka is a very memorable character the moment you see him.

The facial features was one of the first times I was actually pleased with a result, so I am glad you liked it .  The hair is also something most people seem to like as well.  Good thing as I spent as much time there as the rest of the picture!

The shoulders has been a massive point on just about all comments so I think that will be the next piece I study anatomically, along with arms and torso proportions!

Neck-wise, he does have a rather fat neck.  I 'think' I've actually got the proportions right there, but because the shoulders are off it makes it look thicker than it should.  I could be wrong though!

Shoulders and shading...  If you mean the darker shoulder, I knew the second I did it I'd done screwed up there!  Unfortunately, being copics, it's not something easily fixed, so I just ran with it and tried to darken up that side a bit more on the clothes to 'try' and make it look more twisted so it would be more shaded.

I think it might have worked if I'd gone with a grey to darken the current tones, rather than a darker brown.  It just makes it look like a failed tanning salon visit .  The character himself is supposed to be extremely pale, so I went with light shading on the rest of the skin.

hello! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>
here for a.deviantart.net/avatars/p/r/p… " alt=" " title="ProjectComment" />

First off I will share my initial impression.
And really you can try, but the hair is the first thing your eyes get drawn to XD such vibrancy :3

I will start with addressing the overall anatomy. After getting some references, I think you get the facial features very right e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/> They are the focal point, so well done on that e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/> from the small and pointy nose to the playful smirk, you did very well captivating what this character's unique features are! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/> Very recognizable and engaging with the viewer :3
However the same cannot be said about the rest of the body. The shoulder - head reference is very off compared to the art style of the original anime/manga. So I suggest for future pieces to either shrinken the head if you want to show the ends of the shoulder or to show only a small part fo the upper body e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>
What would also help to convey dimension would be some additional lines on the neck. The jugular is concealed in this angle, but there are two bones connecting from the bottom of the skull to the collar bones and these convey a lot of raw manliness e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/> so maybe something you can play around with in future pieces e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Next I will address the colors e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>
I have troubles figuring out what kind of medium you used to be honest.
My guess is acrylics....? and pall point for the line art? I have to guess. It would be very helpful if you added something like this to the description of the picture e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>
you used mainly primary colors for the outfit - which I had troubles finding references for. Apparently that guy likes to change costumes XD
You got shading in some right places but ultimately it's hard to tell because in many places the shading is too vague. You need to pour more color into that e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>
you could even try this with this image since oyu already photographed and uploaded it e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>
To explain more in detail, I'll give you an example. The hair seems to receiving light from the front/above. But then the dark blue shirt is lit from the right/behind of him and the collar of the shirt is shaded differently again. You definitely need to get more consistency in there e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

The hair shows promise with structure and highlights. But again you sorta stopped half way, which is a shame because you are on the right track e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>
adding a more shaded hairline should be a priority in my opinion like in this picture e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/> most of his pictures have this sleek hairline, so while it's not looking naturally, it definitely earns you once again points in the accuracy department e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

On a personal note, the frame around isn't necessary e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/> To me a more ragged end of a picture that shows brush strokes or pen strokes shows individuality and gives it more of an artistic vibe e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

keep on going with it! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>
best of luck :3

Thank you kindly for the comments .  I have been struggling to see the issues mentioned with the shoulders as I can't actually see what's wrong in terms of dimensions.

Clearly there's something as it's commonly advised.  I think I need a wider range of sources so I can look at it more clearly!

The medium is done in Copic Markers and the line art was done with a Copic Multiliner 0.3.

This is the first image I have done using coloured markers, the first one I did in Copics full stop is the Kakashi image I have also added recently, so I am still mostly getting a feel for them at the moment .

Colour-wise, on the clothes I deviated from the source material as I wanted it to have more vivid shading and I didn't like the flat change from the neck 'ridges' (whatever they are), to the clothing.  So, I added the collar and turned it more from white to grey to deepen the shading a bit.

The card suits I changed from black to red, primarily to fit it in with the hair more and because the rest is fairly colourful, the patch over the chest covered the darks and I didn't want it to become 'too' dark .

I did spend about as much time on the hair as the rest of the image entirely, I spent about 2 hrs there and the same again, slightly less in fact, on the rest as I wanted to test how quickly I could get a 'passable' coverage etc.

Lastly, for the border, I do those more because I like it personally myself .  I hate my artwork going over the edge of the paper, so I give myself a border about half an inch in.  Do you mean to just do this invisibly?

take for example this one

broad shoulders and pronounced anatomy. You bring so many great details in the face that you need to carry on this level of detail to deliver a cohesive overall look

not familiar with these sort of pens, so the time frames mean little to my own understanding, so sorry O-O
(watercolor pics usually take 4-7h and digital 15-30h for me XO)

oh it was just a personal remark XD if you like it neat and tidy, that is perfectly fine
perhaps you could then add an actualy artistic frame on top of it?
(because the few tiny bits where you drew over the line keep drawing my eyes towards it O-O)

Gareque In reply to May-May-Meow [2017-01-20 23:53:46 +0000 UTC]

Watching more of the anime tonight I can also see it there tbh.  Always good to have smething to improve on at least .

Ordinarily I take a long, long time doing work.  I just wanted to see if I can increase the speed on this once the hair was done.  I am finding colouring with copics though is lightning fast compared to just about any other medium.  Take the picture I am working on of Kallen from Code Geass atm.  That's in Polychromos pencils and I've probably spent more than 3 hours on the hair getting enough layers to be smooth and it's still not perfect.

With the markers though, to blend them the ink needs to stay wet to blend without over-saturating the page.  So you have to move fairly fast regardless.  If you can get past the initial price hike (there are many sites selling 72 pen sets for about £160 which isn't that bad for 72 pens really) then I highly recommend it.  I started with a cheap £16 set of 5 greyscale pens.

Line wise, I am still struggling with the more detailed control work with the pens as they have a brush tip, so it moves a lot more than the pencils I am used to.  As a result, on thin sections or set lines (particularly when moving fast like I was here) I sometimes move the pen in the wrong direction and the brush tip moves the wrong way.  It's all a learning process though .

Thanks a lot, for the advice too .  I am getting a lot of comments about the shoulders, but I am struggling to see it myself in that area.  I am clearly missing something others arent!  But, in all references I see, his cloths go out about shoulders go out about 50% past his face under the clothes, then about half that again, which I've tried to do here.

I'll need to look through a wider range of source photos I think!

Hello! I'm here from ProjectComment and I felt like leaving a little critique. First off, I LOVE how bright and colorful this picture is! They're very bold and fit the personality of the character well. You did pretty alright with the shading too, which is pretty impressive with marker. For improvement, you could maybe work on his facial expression and posture, he seems a little stiff and flat; which kind of conflicts with his sarcastic facial expression. You could also maybe do more with his mouth, otherwise great job.

Thanks .  At the moment I am mostly doing 'draw what I see'.  I've only picked up drawing again properly about 2-3 months ago, so I am just practicing the basics until it becomes more natural.  I am starting to look at drawing from memory as well as making up my own characters, but as I am certain you know, it's a long process .

Once I get that down though, I'll be looking at some more dynamic images of Hisoka as the character has a huge amount of potential imo!
