"Wivern" is 17th century word, largely used to describe a heraldric beast.
"Dragon" is a 13th century derivation of the Latin and ultimately Greek word for dragon or sea serpent.
When I'm designing a monster, I ignore the modern definitions derived from video games or popular culture and look into the roots of the terms. I choose the one that would have been in use at the approximate era or technical level when my story is being told. Most of my current work is told from the perspective on the late 15th century.
