I know. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that somehow he's in Purgatory. They never say where dead angels go, so maybe that's it.

Me too. It would be wonderful. I was thinking the same thing. So Dean and Cass being in purgatory with all those pissed off angels and monster they'd killed over the years would be kinda like sending a police officer to prison with all the people he's sent down. I was kinda thinking Tango and Cash. 
Gabriel would be the only one there they weren't responsible for.

Of course there's always the second option. That while Cass and Dean are sent to purgatory, Gabriel is returned to earth just in time to save Sam from a Leviathan.
