Is this all just carved from one piece of metal or is the general shape carved and then the little pieces added? (Like the little copper looking tube for instance, and the possibly soldered wire to secure it.)

the main part is hand carved of the jewelry wax and then cast from sterling silver, little parts are soldered - it is classic jewelry technology ))
