Don't worry too much on it. It's done like this:
I do all my shading on a seperate hue/saturation layer. And this was inked, and that's important because I couldn't do this with a dirty drawing so well. So, first I selected all the white parts. Then I inverted the selection. memoryThen I expanded the selection by 5 pixels. Then I deleted it from the layer mask over the hue/saturation. It came out looking embossed (or it should, this is from memory, so there might be a mistake in my retelling). After that it's just a simple matter of making it look good. All in all, easy shading.
