Amazing work, I always felt there was something lacking to a great portion He-Man art over the years. It needs the touch of Frazetta, this is a damn good representation of that and pays an excellent homage to a fantastic artist. Very beautiful work.

I totally agree! Since He-man is basically a merger of Conan and Star Wars, it only makes sense to bring a bit of Frazetta into his look! In all fairness, though...I don't know if you've seen the He-man paintings of the legendary Earl Norem (check this out www.earlnorem.com/MOTU%20Galle… , he brings some strong Frazetta overtones to He-man as well. He's mostly famous for his work on He-man, but I think he actually worked on Conan a little, too.

Hahaha, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Howard's take on He-man. Thanks!

I think Howard would have played up Adam's discomfort with the power of Grayskull and the burden that comes with it. His Conan stories had the middle-aged King Conan wrestling with the difficulties of being a leader, whether he was really suited for it, and if he'd outlived his usefulness as a warrior. The Conan of the original pulps was a very thoughtful, reflective character (touched on in Milius' film, but lost in the sequel and spinoffs), and I'd imagine he'd have done much the same with He-Man.

You're welcome. Yeah, I'm a fan from way back. He-man is one of my earliest favorites too! I just love reminiscing about the old favorites.
Speaking of reminiscing: Have you ever heard of the Nostalgia Critic?

Nostalgia Critic is an internet critic who specializes in memorable entertainment from our childhood. He's the same age as us and he grew up watching the same cartoons like TMNT, He-man, G.I. Joe etc. His unique takes on my old favorites are fun to watch and I feel like I'm watching my favorite history teacher from middle school. I laugh and occasionally learn something new from him.
We have the same sense of humor; just like you and me.
He's the funny type of critic. Like a comedian/critic, who takes the work seriously, respecting works like Batman the Animated Series, but he also likes to joke about the flaws in the shows; instead of disdaining the faults of a show, he makes a joke about it.
He's like Jim Carey, if he were a movie critic; like Jim Carey meets Roger Ebert.
His Top Eleven lists are among my favorite videos:

I didn't mean to bother you but I really wanted to share these great videos with you. They keep me laughing every day.
Now, it's your turn to laugh!
Enjoy!

Usually, I block in the figures with blue or purple before I start, and use those tones as shadows as I paint toward the highlights. In the original Conan piece, though, the shadows are this dingy olive green color. I used that color to block in my figures, which yields that gritty, "post-battle" look. Also, drawing anatomy using Frazetta as a reference gave me a much more solid, heavy-looking figure.

That's exactly what prompted the piece! I don't know if the story is true or not, but there are worse characters to be based on!

Honestly, I think it's true. I mean, Thulsa Doom was James Earl Jones in the movie, but in the books and comics, he's a skull-faced Necromancer. Coincidence? Probably not. BUT I don't think there is anything wrong with it...I mean, Superman was based on Doc Savage, Batman was based on The Shadow, and the list goes on and on. He-man has evolved beyond those original toys (remember, he used to be a barbarian who lived in the Eternian forest), just like Superman and Batman have.
And yeah, the Transformer movies blow. I never saw 2 or 3, but the first one was awful enough to keep me away.

Yeah, exactly! Creators pull from stuff they like, and use it to create new material. As long as it's not a total rip-off carbon copy, I don't think there's anything wrong with it. It's a natural part of the creative process.

Pretty much. A friend of mine - who I won't name because I love her dearly - hated WALL-E for "ripping off" Star Wars and other such films - even though Star Wars "ripped off" the old Akira Kurosawa films & Saturday morning cliffhangers. :shrugs:

Apparently there are long distance scenery shots in "Wall-E" that resemble long distance scenery shots of Star Wars. Why that was so offensive to her I have no idea. :shrugs:
