Description This is for 's Thundercats jam. He asked that it be a full figure in B&W, so I'm guessing that this will be a part of a group shot that'll be colored later.

Lion-O's shirt always kinda reminded me of a Roman breastplate, so I tweaked his design to make him look a bit more regal (he is lord of the Thundercats, after all ). I thought about adding a cape, but I didn't want to obscure any characters that might be added later, so I just gave him a little crotch cape

Thanks! I tried to keep the tweaking in the same vein as the original design, so it still looks like Lion-O.

Snoop : HO's? Where they at?
R-Kelly : Daaaaammmnnn.... i want me some Ho's!

I was wondering who DW asked to do Lion-O... LOL. Good job man! Love the original take on the lord of the Cats. i think the cape would have looked better though.

GavinMichelli In reply to semaj007 [2008-05-14 17:32:51 +0000 UTC]

I think the cape would look better, too. I just didn't know if everyone's contributions to the jam were going to be combined into a big group shot or what, so I cut the cape for composition purposes. I might add it later, though . Your version of Lynx-O kicks ass, btw.

semaj007 In reply to GavinMichelli [2008-05-15 05:09:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks bro... DW said that our jam will be competing against the villain's jam so i kinda added "ummph" into it. Wish we could have added shades and tones though coz my piece looks flat without his spots, marks and whatnots.

As for LionO, ask DW if it would be ok to add the cape coz it would really show the regality of the character!

Thunder.
Thunder!
THUNDER!!

THUNDERTHIGHS!

That's what would say were he Liono.

Lovin this. I remember when Thundercats first aired in Greece in the 80's it was considered mature animation so it was on at 10 at night!

Loved that show...

Mature Animation? SRSLY? I had no idea Greece had such stringent animation regulations! Well, Cheetara's uniform was a little skimpy....

That was only back in the 80s. Now things are the complete opposite.

Good to hear The rules on cartoons were a little tighter in the States, too. I remember watching G.I Joe as a kid and thinking "Why the hell are they shooting laser guns? Where are the bullets?" Only later did I find out that catoons weren't allowed to show guns with bullets, hence the lasers. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle

Did you go to art school? If so...what's a good course to take to learn how to draw muscles well? I look at bodybuilding mags n all that (my coworkers think I'm wierd, and don't believe me when I say it's for art reference) but I really don't feel like I'm getting anywhere.

Nice work, I like the tweaked design.

GavinMichelli In reply to Artillery-Ninja [2008-05-14 05:14:14 +0000 UTC]

I actually went to LSU for a painting degree, which....well, crushed my creative drive, stunted my cartooning skills, and left me unable to produce comic book art for almost 6 months. I did learn how to paint, though

If you want a hardcore primer on anatomy, pick up two books: "Anatomy for the Artist" by Jeno Barcsay and "Constructive Anatomy" by George Bridgeman. Bridgeman does a great job with general muscle groups and how to use them in practical drawing, while Barcsay is so detailed and methodical, you could use his book to perform surgery. Get those books, and you'll never have another anatomy question again.

Definitely keep looking at those magazines, though. Once you've got a good idea about where all of those muscles and bones are, you'll get so much more out of those bodybuilding pics. If your co-workers give you static, just say something like "I've got to get my rocks off some how!" It won't stop the weird looks, but I promise they'll leave you alone

I also like to check out some comic book anatomy masters like Bart Sears and Claudio Castellini, as well as some of the old masters like Michelangelo. Late Hellenistic and Roman sculpture also features a lot of bone-crushing anatomy, so that's always a great source of inspiration.

Anyway, I hope all of that babble is helpful. Thanks for the compliment, too

Artillery-Ninja In reply to GavinMichelli [2008-05-14 21:12:25 +0000 UTC]

Very, actually. I wrote down the names of those books. I'll look them up and see if I can get them without having to drive forty miles to the nearest intellectual hotspot (I live in podunkville, texas. Where people say 'se'm' instead of 'seven'. Gr.). I had an older drawing book that referenced a statue of Heracles, but the views and pose were limited. Thanks for the babble though

you going to do the rest og the Thunder Cats?

GavinMichelli In reply to PDInk [2008-05-14 17:29:11 +0000 UTC]

Actually, Lion-O is part of a jam that's going on, so I think eventually there will be a group shot with all of the T-cats done by different artists. My buddy semaj007 threw one down [link] , but I don't know who else is taking part.

*looks at sig* You support the "Out of Africa" theory, huh? Me too. I think the "Multi-regional" theory is horse shit, and I don't understand how it gets taken seriously at all.
