GORGON

Gorgons are terrifying monsters with venomous snakes for hair. But their most infamous trait is their ability to petrify any living creature that looks into their eyes. The most famous Gorgons are the three sisters from Greek Mythology: Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale. But since they are mythological figures, there are many conflicting versions of their story. What is confirmed is that it is the result of a curse. Medusa was said to have been a beautiful woman before she was turned into a hideous creature.
The Gorgon Curse is a closely guarded secret among the practitioners of black magic, reserved as a punishment for the most egregious of offenses and to be used sparingly. It's used so rarely for while it ostracizes the victim from the rest of the world, the Gorgon is also a danger to one that cursed them. Some witches even place the curse upon themselves to gain the curse's terrible power but doom themselves to life of isolation and being hunted.
The curse affects each victim differently. Some have wings, some have a giant snake tail instead of legs, and some are otherwise normal except for the snake hair. The stare of a Gorgon only affects the living with other Gorgons and the undead being immune. It only works by direct eye contact, a Gorgon's reflection having no effect. The blood of a Gorgon is also highly poisonous, but it can be used to make an elixir that can heal any wound and even save those at the brink of death. Even in death, the gaze of a Gorgon can still petrify.

JERSEY DEVIL

The legends go that in 1735 a woman named Jane Leeds was expecting her thirteenth child. Already overwhelmed by having to provide for twelve other children, the exasperated Mother Leeds cursed her unborn child saying, "Let the thirteenth be a devil!" When the child was born, it started off as a normal baby boy but then changed into a monster that lashed out at everyone before flying up the chimney and out into the Pine Barrens of New Jersey.
It's unknown how the curse was invoked. Some have come to believe that Mother Leeds was a witch, some say that the father was the Devil, and others say that her wish had unknowingly evoked powers beyond her understanding. Regardless of the cause of the curse, people have claimed to have seen the elusive creature for nearly three centuries. It's described as a winged creature with hoofed feet, forked tail, and burning red eyes. Its horned head is said to resemble that of a goat, horse, or a dog and it has a blood-curdling scream.
The secret of the Leeds Devil is that there isn't just one. When Mother Leeds said, "Let the thirteenth be a devil!" she had inadvertently cursed all of her bloodline. Ever since, the thirteenth Leeds descendant born per generation becomes the next Jersey Devil. The transformation is sporadic and temporary like Lycanthropy, and the afflicted person is unaware of the transformation. That's why the creature is so illusive; no one can predict when or where the devil will appear.

LA LLORONA

In Sixteenth Century Mexico, a beautiful woman named María fell in love with a wealthy man. They married and had two children, but one day she saw her husband with another woman. Driven mad by her grief, she took her children down to a river and drowned them. After coming to her senses, she saw what she had done and drowned herself as well. But for what she had done, she was barred from entering the afterlife. She arose from the dead as a revenant, an undead creature cursed to walk the world until their unfinished purpose has been completed. Her curse is that the bodies of her murdered children have to be found and given a proper burial before she can she can join them in the afterlife.
The revenant of María is known as La Llorona, "the Weeping Woman." Her story is known throughout Latin America, parents warning their children to be wary around rivers. She appears as a woman dressed in white with a haunting wail. Children lured to the water by the sound of her crying are in danger because she will mistake them for her own lost children. Once she realizes her mistake, she'll try to drown them in her rage.

Notes:
  • I included the Gorgon because they've appeared in the Castlevania series and the Hammer film, The Gorgon.
  • As with a lot of monsters in Greek Mythology, Gorgons aren't born but are the result of a curse.
  • I made the undead immune to the Gorgon stare because immortal beings like the Greek Gods were unaffected.
  • I got the idea of Gorgon witches from the game Ogre Battle: Person of Lordly Caliber, where one of the main antagonists is a witch who is revealed to be a Gorgon.
  • I made it so that each Gorgon can look different. While the Clash of the Titans look is the most well known in modern media, the Gorgon seen here is based on how they're described in Greek Mythology.
  • The Jersey Devil is one of my favorite North American monsters. I based its design on the bizarre and creepy depictions of the Devil in Medieval and Renaissance artwork.
  • The Jersey Devil's head is described as being either a goat's, a horse's, or a dog's. I made it so that it looks similar to all three but isn't exactly like any of them.
  • I got the idea that the Jersey Devil is a curse passed down and could be anyone from the board game Horrified: American Monsters. It gives the monster the mystery of who could it be.
  • My wife's family is Panamanian so she grew up hearing stories of La Llorona from her mother and Abuela. The version they have in Panama is Tulevieja.
  • I based La Llorona's design partially on Sadako/Samara from The Ring.
