Not long after Donkey Kong and Wrinkly Kong's son, Donkey Kong Junior, was born, he was kidnapped by the Magikoopa Kamek under the orders of King Morton Koopa . The Koopa King's own son, Bowser, was a Star Child, one blessed by Rosalina to have great power and a great destiny. However, Kamek foresaw that there would be seven Star Children in total, and King Morton feared that the other six would interfere with his plans to take over the Mushroom World. Five of the other children were found and taken from their families, but they were rescued by a friendly tribe of Yoshisaurs. Despite being infants, the Star Children were able to help the Yoshisaurs to defeat King Morton and then were returned to their parents.
A few years later, Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Junior were captured and taken to New Donk City to be put on display in a zoo. But the hunters didn't know that the Kongs were intelligent. Enraged that humans would dare take him and his son from their home, Donkey Kong broke loose and went on a rampage. After kidnapping a woman named Pauline, he climbed to the top of a construction site but was stopped by the woman's husband, Jovani "Jumpman" Mario .
Upon being recaptured, Donkey Kong was taken to his intended destination: the New Donk City Zoo. While Donkey Kong was placed in heavy restraints, his smaller son was able to slip free and released the other animals of the zoo to create a distraction while he tried to free his father. Feeling obligated to stop the new rampage, Jumpman went to stop the animals, but Donkey Kong Junior was able to steal the keys from him and unlock Donkey Kong's cage. Father and son were then able to sneak aboard a ship that was headed back to their home.
Back home on Kong Island, Junior would continue to grow, resembling his father more and more with each passing year. Being the son of the Kong Patriarch and one of the Seven Star Children, Donkey Kong Junior would one day be the island's defender and the leader of his people. To prepare him, his father put him through rigorous training. But Junior would rather spend his days hanging out with his best friends, Diddy Kong and Funky Kong, and spending time with his girlfriend, Candy Kong. Whenever he could, he would play hooky only to get scolded by his "Cranky" father later. Because of his cantankerous personality, Junior and his friends would call Donkey Kong Senior "Cranky Kong" behind his back. And to his friends, Junior was simply known as "DK," him not liking being called "Junior."
It annoyed Cranky whenever his son wouldn't take his training seriously, but Wrinkly tried to convince him to let their son have some fun. So when DK and his friends snuck away to go to some party in New Donk City, Cranky begrudgingly let them go. A literal party animal, DK got himself into trouble upon arriving in the big city. After causing havoc in a greenhouse by eating the tasty fruit in the exotic trees being grown there, he and his friends noticed that the party was actually a celebration being held in Mario's honor. Wanting to have fun, Donkey Kong decided to crash the party. He then noticed the beautiful Mayor Pauline. Seeing all the attention she was giving to the funny looking plumber, he got jealous and decided to show her how to really party. This led to him kidnapping her and climbing to the top of a construction site, unknowingly recreating his father's action from years ago. After being stopped by Mario, the ashamed Donkey Kong apologized to Pauline and returned to Kong Island.
But upon returning home, he learned that his father was injured defending Kong Island from the Kremling pirates while he was gone. DK blamed himself; if he hadn't slacked off from his duties, then he could have helped his father fight off the pirates. He then vowed to live up to his father's expectations and become the hero he was always meant to be. Taking the role the defender of Kong Island more seriously, he fights off the self-proclaimed "King" K. Rool whenever he and his pirates try to raid their island. Though he still likes to have fun, he has become a mighty warrior and has earned the name of "Donkey Kong."
The three designs show Donkey Kong at different stages of his life. The first is him as a baby and is a combination of his designs from Yoshi's Island DS with the classic look from Donkey Kong Jr. This would be him when he was kidnapped by Kamek and when he and his father were taken to New Donk City. The middle design is based on the more mature Donkey Kong Junior seen in games like Super Mario Kart. This would be him as a child/young teenager. If anyone prefers the timeline where the current Donkey Kong is the grandson of Cranky Kong, then this is how Donkey Kong Junior would have looking during the events of Donkey Kong Jr and would have taken place before Yoshi's Island. The final design is Donkey Kong Junior(or Donkey Kong III if you prefer) all grown up.
