This is a showcase of some of the most notorious thieves of the Mushroom World. This also serves as a redesign for Wario and Waluigi . Wario is Mario's rival. Ever since Mario became the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom, Wario was extremely jealous of all the praise he was receiving. Being one of the Seven Star Children, he believed he was destined to be the hero, but his chance to shine was taken from him. As a reward for saving the Mushroom Kingdom from King Bowser Koopa, the Mario Brothers were given a castle, lands, and titles. However, the humble brothers thought it was too much and settle for a modest sized house near Toad Town to go along with their New Donk City apartment. Wario vowed to get back at Mario by plotting to steal the castle intended for Mario.
The opportunity arose when Tatanga tried to take over Sarasaland. Tatanga used his alien technology to hypnotize the inhabitants of Sarasaland in order to take control. He then planned on making Daisy marry him but was stopped by Mario. Once Mario returned from Sarasaland, he discovered his castle had been taken over by Wario. Though he never lived in the castle, he didn't want Peach's gift to him to be stolen like that. Making his way inside, he found Wario. The two had met early in life when they were kidnapped by Kamek and Wario had always been jealous of him. After a fight, Mario was able to talk Wario down and tried to make peace. But Wario left grumbling, vowing to prove one day that he is better than him.
After being bested by Mario, Wario went off to find his own treasure. His journey led him to Kitchen Island, the home of the Brown Sugar Pirates led by Maple Syrup, captain of the Tea Cup. Since he couldn't claim Mario's treasure, he decided to steal from the pirates instead, beginning another rivalry. He managed to steal a magic lamp from Captain Syrup and wished for his own castle. Not to be outdone, the Brown Sugar Pirates raided Wario's castle of it's treasures. From then on, Wario and Syrup have been stealing from each other at every opportunity.
Just like Wario is Mario's self-declared archrival, Waluigi is Luigi's. Waluigi is Wario's... brother?... friend?... let's go with partner-in-crime. Like Wario, Waluigi is extremely jealous of Luigi's success and fame. He also tries to compete with Luigi for Daisy's affections, but she finds him repulsive. He's a cheat and schemer, the only person willing to work with him being Wario. Despite his repulsiveness, he thinks himself a ladies man. If Wario represents the sin of Greed, then Waluigi represents the sin of Envy.
There are many theories regarding Waluigi's identity. The simplest explanation is that he really is Wario's brother. Some claim that he's an actor hired by Wario who hates Luigi for some unknown reason. Committed to the role, he even legally changed his name to Waluigi. Another theory is that he is a clone created by Wario through science and/or magic so that he could have a brother of his own so he could compete with the Mario Brothers. This would explain why he hates Luigi, Waluigi having an inferiority complex and impostor syndrome. Whatever the truth is, they will never tell.
But Wario and Waluigi finally got their big break when Wario helped the other Star Children save the world from Dark Bowser . As a reward, Rosalina offered to grant her chosen champions one wish each . While everyone else made selfless wishes that brought happiness to others, Wario predictably made a selfish wish for an endless bag of gold coins. Rosalina tried to give Wario the opportunity to do something for someone other than himself, but he just wanted the gold. Disappointed, Rosalina obliged and granted his wish.
Wario and Waluigi began flaunting their newfound wealth, but it only caught the attention of Captain Syrup, who stole the Bottomless Coin Sack. Wario and Waluigi lamented their misfortune, but they still had some coins left from the coin bag. An idea came to Wario; they could use the money to start a business to make up for their losses! And so, they founded the video game company, WarioWare Inc. The company proved to be successful and they were able to hire many employees, giving them well paying jobs and forming lasting friendships in the process. It seems like Wario got his wish after all and became a better person in the process... just as Rosalina intended.
Another notorious criminal in the Mushroom World is Croco. Though he is a crocodile and a thief, he isn't a member of the Kremling Krew . Instead, he runs his own gang of hoodlums. He also shamelessly wears crocodile skin shoes! He first encountered Mario during a crime spree in Toad Town. Along with a wallet he stole from a Mushroom Man, he stole a precious Frog Coin from Mallow . Mario agreed to help the boy to retrieve the stolen loot, but that proved to be harder than they thought for Croco was infamous for being a fast runner. But they cornered him and forced him to hand over the goods.
Mario and his allies would occasionally bump into Croco and his gang while on their quest to save the world from the Smithy Gang . Most notable of these encounters is when he stole from Mario, Mallow, and Geno in the mines of Moleville. But after being beaten time and time again, Croco eventually helped out in the end, selling rare items to Mario's team before their battle with Smithy. He ends up hanging out on Yoshi's Island and participating in the Mushroom Derby with the Yoshisaurs.
But unlike Wario, Waluigi, and Croco who have redeeming qualities, there is one thief who is unquestionably evil. And that would be Wingo the Roc. He is one of the Seven Monster Kings, the Mushroom World Organization's most feared leaders of monsterkind. Wingo is known as the "King of Thieves," for like the real world legends of dragons, he has a vast hoard of treasure that he has accumulated from the wealth he has stolen from all over the world. He also has an army of Klepto Condors that go out and bring back anything of value that they can steal to him.
Wingo possesses the magic Cape Feather which he wears in his turban. This feather grants the bearer power over the winds. Mario can use the feather to fly , but Wingo uses it to its full extent, creating hurricane strength winds. Wingo keeps his treasure atop of a tower in Mountain Land. He is also the nemesis of Captain Toad. When Captain Toad and Toadette were searching for a golden statue said to contain the power of a Star Spirit , Wingo swept in and stole the statue and Toadette. Captain Toad had to scale Wingo's treacherous tower in order to save his girlfriend and recover the golden star.
As a reminder, everything star related is all the same thing in this AU: Star Spirits. They're mostly based on the Lumas where they are infant spirits that become the heavenly bodies once they're ready to leave Star World. But before then, they live with Rosalina and assist her in shaping destiny. From time to time, Rosalina does send Star Spirits down to the Mushroom World for a special purpose, such as lending Mario their power and turn him into Starman Mario. Coincidentally, the Wishing Star from the recent film Puss in the Boots: the Last Wish is a good example of how this works in this AU.
