I learned online that Akira got the idea for Korin from watching his cat sleep. That's why his eyes are always closed.

Akira Toriyama based his face on the face of his sleeping cat! The perpetually closed eyes probably giving him an air of wisdom. I imagine that he was like 'wise man on a mountain', 'ascetic seated on a pole', and 'cat on top of a pole' all rolled into one as he lived for hundreds of years atop the Korin Tower.
This is a fun little pic of him--great job capturing the 'old wise man' behind the cat face. I like the 'catlike' way he's shown holding onto his crooked staff. You don't see much background, but enough to make out the pillers of his house atop the crazy totem pole tower and the blue sky and clouds that surrounded the house.

He was a really cool character. When I first saw him as a kid I thought it was so funny when he put snot into Tao's drink.
