Details
Personality:
Odessa did not originally come from a hoofmaiden line. She is one who has picked and scratched her way to a more dignified position in Glenmore. She was not blessed in the way of looks, at least as far as Glenmore’s ideals, and being the daughter of a gravedigger, her low status made her undesirable among more esteemed stags. So, she had to resort to other methods to land her in the presence of royalty. Little did she know she would come to thoroughly enjoy her work, and pride herself in her achievements.
Odessa is a realist, and does not expect to find love in a world that deems her ugly. She remains focused on her work, dutiful and industrious. She’s inventive in her floral arrangements, consistently trying to bring new ideas to the table, providing her lord or lady approves of them.
Despite her hard work, Odessa holds a rather devious air about her. Her aspirations often get the better of her, which can lead to her belief that she is more exceptional than what is reality. She can be sharp-tongued, if given the chance, though does her best to practice self-restraint in this regard.
Appearance:
Roaning decorates the pelt of the hoofmaiden, improving her dark coat ever the slightest. She is lithe and slender, and holds her head high. Her beauty isn’t traditional, but she isn’t unsightly. She wears her mane and tail in intricate knots, as Odessa likes to practice her talent on herself as often as she can, so that her betters are constantly impressed with her handy work. She keeps herself clean and well-kept. Her coat is adamantly groomed, and her hooves remain uncracked and unchipped. She is stylish, and does her best to keep up with the latest fashions.
History:
Odessa was the offspring of a commoner and an undertaker. Though her parents loved her dearly, the little filly grew up unprivileged and longing to wake up from the nightmare that was her rank. She always felt that she deserved more than what the world had given her, and for that reason, she sought training as a hoofmaiden.
In her fourth year of life, she became an undermaid, studying with an elderly doe named Miara (NPC). She apprenticed with one who came from a long line of hoofmaidens, and therefore her training derived from the best. However, Odessa did not appreciate the lack of creativity in Miara’s work. Still, she never mentioned it, out of fear of being kicked out for such impertinence, and managed to keep her head above water by distracting herself from hair and fashion and focusing more on day-to-day duties. Once she had mastered the art of keeping and maintaining a royal den, and learning the basics of braiding and floral arrangements, she began to experiment on her own, away from Miara’s judgemental gaze.
By the time she was six and had graduated from her undermaid position, Odessa had been assigned to a lesser-royal family (NPC), and began serving them all as a unit. It was tedious work, especially since she was on her own, and her experiments died down as the amount of busywork increased.
At the age of ten, she left the family, and sought labor elsewhere. She began working for a lady by the name of Eya (NPC). She adored the doe, for she allowed Odessa to work her magic as she pleased. This is when Odessa’s style truly started to manifest - she learned the true beauty of being a hoofmaiden, and fell in love with her career. However, after three years of serving Lady Eya, the royal was found guilty of a scandalous love affair, and deemed tainted. The loss of the girl broke Odessa’s heart, but she managed to gather herself and move on, determined to stay fixated on her goals.
From the winter of year 764 to the summer of year 765, the roan was out of a job, but did a bit of freelance work when she could. It was during this time that she met Althea , and became one of her Doelings. She spent half a year training and helping the cream-colored doe at her market stand. Eventually, she was sought out for work by Princess Helena , much to her surprise. Serving a princess, Odessa thinks, is her proudest accomplishment, and she intends to do an impeccable job of caring for the gentle fae. She still trains with Althea on the side, though, working to improve her physical abilities in order to protect her precious charge.
Upon hitting her prime in the spring of year 766, Odessa felt she had finally achieved most of her goals, and was residing happily in the glade of the royal family she served. However, there still seemed to be something missing—a void that needed to be filled. After heavy contemplation throughout the summer, the hoofmaiden realized that she desired love. However, it wasn't necessarily romantic affection she sought—the doe knew she hardly had the time or the beauty for that. No, she wanted something a bit more . . . real.
So, she approached a royal guard—an up-and-comer who showed great promise in his service to Lord Prendergast II . Nebuchadnezzar was tall, dark and loyal. Odessa chose him in hopes he would pass on these admirable, traditional traits to his offspring. She had no wish to see her son or daughter suffer the same treatment she had in her youth.
With the help of the glade's healer, Grier , Odessa brought into the world a perfectly healthy (even if somewhat oddly-colored) little colt in the early spring of year 767. She named the child Vahana , and throughout his first year, the two were inseparable.
However, their connection began to fade when, in fall of year 768, she was welcomed into the harem of Lord Yarrow . Vahana was less than thrilled by the prospect of being in a strange stag's glade, and quickly started to grow less attached to his mother. Despite Vahana's training, and his dam's intense desire for him to join the guard so that he may earn a respectable name for himself, the colt seemed to have other plans for his future. Odessa does not approve of this, and is frustrated with her son for his disobedience, but she would not allow him to stand in the way of her dream of becoming a member of high society. While at first she struggled with the idea of letting her firstborn go, she has found solace in her new role in life, and eventually realized their separation is probably for the best.
With this in mind, and still overjoyed to have caught the eye of such a respectable lord, Odessa agreed to bear Yarrow's fawn. In spring of 769, she birthed a beautiful, royal filly, and named her Dahlia .
That same spring, however, a terrible turn of events uprooted Odessa's livelihood. Her beloved princess charge was declared missing, suspected to have drowned. Odessa is devastated by Helena's disappearance, but she has not given up hope! She is still convinced that the guards will find her and bring her home.
