Description

A few months ago, I got word that my neighbor was sick. I was told she had cancer. Cancer or not, at that time, I wasn't initially too worried yet, because they thought they had caught it at an early stage.

They hadn't.

She was sent to a hospital far from here, and given immediate treatments. But...there was nothing they could do. The back cancer spread through her body, until it invaded every bone. She was in a lot of pain and I worried about her a lot. I also knew that Lillian was strong and she could beat this.

She couldn't.

A couple days ago, Lillian was brought home from the hospital. Her only wish being that she'd die at home with her family, and not surrounded with hospital equipment, needles, and lonliness.

Her impending death is taking more of a toll on me than I thought. I first met Lillian soon after moving to NB. It was the first snow fall and a big one; mom and I asked it we could use their hill to slide on and of course they said yes. That's where I first met Lillian. She brought us hot chocolate and we all sipped it under the stars.

We were typical neighbors. If I saw her out there, I'd chat with her on my way to and from school. Helped if she needed it; I got extra candy from her on Halloween. Just neighborly stuff, but now I am regretting never getting to know her more than just a neighbor; I'm all out of time too. Perhaps that's why I'm so struck with grief, because it's mostly regret.

She really is an amazing woman and so strong, still in good spirits, even though she's in so much pain and deteriorating so fast.

I don't know how long she has; it could be a few days, a few weeks, months, or even a year. But it's soon... I...I feel it's a matter of days - we all do.

I spent my night making cookies for her, this picture, and doing quite a lot of crying. It isn't uncommon for me to cry when I can't get a picture to look right (they always say art takes sweat, blood, and tears). I think it was because I didn't know how much time I'd have to make this for her and I wanted it to be perfect.

I wasn't in a creative state tonight, and I could barely think straight, but I needed to finish this! I might not have a "tomorrow" to procrastinate with! I might not even have until tomorrow morning....

I don't know how I'll be able to keep myself together when I go over tomorrow.. I doubt I'll be able to do it, but I'll try.

And I hope she'll love this gift.

Because she is now and forever will be an angel.

I love you, Lillian. Please know that you made everyone's lives in Miramichi just a bit more sunnier.

And your hot chocolate freakin' rocks.

You did the sparkles so pretty. It seems like she's lived a good life, and you seemed to have a considerable part in it.

I'm sure she will love it.
Most neighbors wouldn't care. Cancer is just horrible...
I'm honestly at a loss for words, I wish your neighbor and her family luck and love.

I know how you feel, Jordan. I lost two very important people in my life to cancer two years ago. I still get a little teary eyed when we have family cookouts and they're not there.

I am sure she will love this, it's very beautiful and heartfelt. She is very lucky to have a neighbor like you that cares.

This is a beautiful picture, and the story behind it makes it even better. I'm so sorry about that; but remember when it happens, she'll be happier and in less pain.
