Description Here is another poster showing Christ-Chan explaining the important difference between the Protestants, who take a literal interpretation of the Bible, and Catholics, who take a figurative/symbolic one while making contributions to science, decorating their churches, and defending their faith in the name of Jesus Christ and the Christian faith. I am proud to be a Catholic.

True we Catholics had done things that were pretty bad (ex. Galileo trial, which did not end in his torture), but for most of the time, we have done a lot of good for the Western world. If it weren't for people like Teilhard de Chardin and Gregor Mendel, we would have ended up in the stone age after WW I.

There are Catholic Biblical literalists, and Protestant theistic evolutionists (such as Timothy Keller). Also, Protestants have contributed to the sciences as well (Newton, Babbage, Katherine Johnson, Karl Taylor Compton, Arthur Leonard Schawlow, Donald Knuth). Also, it's hard to champion an institution that tried to put a stranglehold on European printing.

its true that Protestants have contributed to science, I agree with that. But I doubt most of those from the Evangelical branch of Protestantism (Baptists, Pentecostals) would be as rational as them. Also, I think Catholic literalists are probably a minority and most Catholics tend to treat the Bible more metaphorically. Evolution makes more sense than creationism and it also makes God's work even more glorious.

actually the church sending Galileo under house arrest was ironically the church fanatically defending science, not attacking it. Galileo claimed that the science for an earth heliocentric model of the world was already settled when it wasn't. Also he made basically made enemies with the authorities, so really to a large extent it was his own fault what happened to him. It's a bit of a popular misconception to think that the church has been throughout history been against science, when in actuality the church funded tons of scientific, philosophical, ethical and theological advancements.

That is true. Still feel bad about Galileo in a way.

It's a damn shame that people entering my hometown have to look at those "the end is nigh" billboards as they enter and leave. The most influential Protestant in my life is my Lutheran grandmother who had the fortune of attending the best and only religious school in town which happens to be part of my own Catholic parish.

The Galileo trial is an horribly complex point of history. It's cheap rhetorics to reduce it to "Catholics are anti-science" (or "Religion is anti-science"). I swear, he's one of the most badly-used historical characters when it comes to debates.

Yeah, I know. But it was still a mistake because it gave critics an excuse to justify their anti-Catholic bias.

I'm sorry about that. Hope this picture does not pffend. After all, not all Protestants are superstitious.

No, it's not offensive. I just read the title wrong as "Chris-Chan Explains Protestantism" without the "t" in it
