Description Based on Freedom Fighters (a fan continuity based on Sonic the Hedgehog)

After the Xorda gene-bombed the planet Earth, humanity fled underground but animal kind was seldom so lucky. Some species were maintained by man in their pre-bomb state like pets and live stock and beasts of burden brought down into the bunkers, but others were left up above to swelter in the viral apocalypse.
Some animals adapted in a unique way that led to an entirely new species, developing sentience and co-opting the remnants of mankind's technology. These called themselves The Mobians.

But other animals and plants rapidly and madly evolved to survive leading to enormous and almost primeval blending of species. After the gene-bomb fallout faded these creatures and plants thrived in the absence of humans or any other creatures of similar size, and they typically evolved to become truly monstrous and enormous. Mobians and humans alike referred to these towering hybrid animals and colossal plants (often carnivorous) as Megaflora and Megafauna.Β

When humans came back to the surface out of their bunkers they did bring pre-bomb animals back with them to re-settle the planet, but almost immediately found themselves at the mercy of gigantic creatures that either blundered into their settlements or actively hunted them. But humans are nothing if not adaptive themselves and eventually some of the Megafauna had been domesticated, herded, even turned into mounts for scouts and eventually soldiers and the Megaflora had been cultivated for enormous food crops or even organic defensive turrets in the case of the plants that hurled poisoned spines when they sensed danger.Β

Mobians had their own dealings with megafauna and flora. Early in their history Mobians regarded some Megafauna as gods, and when they did train them to be mounts they developed a more symbiotic relationship with the animals than man, treating them less like a dumb animal and more like an ancient being who occasionally permitted the use of themselves to help Mobian society. Some Mobians even provided offerings to Megafauna who had devoured their fellows, believing they could placate the creatures with reverence.
This all changed with the development among Mobians of automated travel. Now Megafauna were an embarrassing relic of the past and Mobians either ignored or discounted them as obstacles in the wilderness or the last outmoded aspect of the old royal calvary who still used them in combat.

Some truly enormous Megaflora and fauna are rumored to exist deep in the sea and haunting the still unexplored parts of the wilderness. Β
