I like coming back to this painting of yours, so beautifully drawn. I wish I could do stuff like this.

I'm glad you like this one. I'm pretty proud of it too.
Are you interested in doing life studies? They can be more entertaining and rewarding than you think!

You don't have to set a time limit, but I do. I get caught up in working on one because I usually want to finish it and make it perfect, so the time limit is there to remind me to work on other things, lol.
A time limit is also useful to get yourself into a routine. Just do something for 20 min to an hour each day.
A guy named Dave Repoza started a group call the Crimson Daggers and has been inviting artists to join him for doing hour long studies each day. He's already hosted a series of Livestreams during which he'll answer people's questions and discuss anything art related. He'll also make fun of his dog in an endearing way and crack jokes all the time. It's very entertaining while doing a study of your own.

Enjoy! And have fun watching your technique improve!

I love this piece, and for having completed it in five hours, I give you kudos. The only issue I have with it is that her jaw (on the right of the picture) is too far down, if that makes sense. You can see in the reference that the place where it sticks out the most is higher up on the face. I realize that the point of using references is not always to create a carbon copy, but in this case it is a flaw rather than an artistic adaption.
That being said, I really love this and you're doing a great job improving your skills!

Yeah you're right about the jaw. For studies like this, it is my goal to do my best to copy the image pixel for pixel as much as I can in a given time. They will always have flaws, but it's more for practice than the end result. Good eye though! I still have a lot of practice ahead of me for portraits, figures, and pretty much everything! hah.
Thanks for the thorough comment! I appreciate the feedback ^^

bvlows my mind like a mind grenade - very good - how did you get this good - traditional paints ?

GenjiLim In reply to happymind [2010-10-21 03:19:44 +0000 UTC]
Ah thanks! I haven't used traditional paints much, but I've been drawing since I was little and I started using a tablet with photoshop about 6 years ago.
I think mostly it really just comes down to patience, practice and persistence.
But I should mention that although my studies like these may look impressive, I did have the help of using guides & grids in Photoshop to help me keep the proportions close to the original. However, I didn't "color pick" for the sake of learning to use colors better.

Great job! I definitely think this is a great piece for only 5 hours. All those complicated shadows on her face must have been a pain!

Thank you! Yeah, the shadows were tough. I was constantly having to guess-pick new colors, and it really slowed down my progress.

Thanks!
Painting with a tablet takes a while to get used to, but stuff like layers and guides can help a lot when creating something like this.
I use Photoshop CS3.

Thank you for your information.
Is Photoshop 7.0 more advanced than CS3?
I saw a graphic poll at #MasterPhotoshop that showed people using more this Photoshop categorie (7.0).

Photoshop 7.0 is pretty good, but it's also outdated.
The versions since then have been Photoshop 7.0.1, CS1, CS2, CS3, CS4, and their latest will be CS5.
