For most people, supporting gay rights is a very personal cause. Because equal rights and treating human beings like human beings is usually a spiffy thing to do.But for some people, supporting gay rights is just a way of saying "I'M BETTER THAN YOU ARE."
Seriously, there are some people (notable teenage girls) who just use gay rights as leverage to be trendy and look open minded. And that's a dick move because it's a serious cause that doesn't need to be mucked up by trendwhores looking for a way to make themselves look better than everyone else.
Even worse are the fucktards that support gay rights because they like yaoi and gay people are just omgirlyaoikawaiidesuneeee~! Those people I wouldn't weep if they got hit by a bus.
DISCLAIMER: No, I don't hate gays. I threw a fucking party when Prop 8 was struck down.

I'm bisexual, and I honestly don't feel the need to constantly talk about gay rights. Sometimes I feel like constantly bringing up gay rights just for the hell of it treats gay people as an "other" instead of treating them like everyone else.
Yaoi is actually not a good representation of gay men. It basically reduces gay men to fanservice, plus the typical yaoi protagonist is usually written as a straight teenage girl in a man's body rather than an actual gay man. I don't know any gay men who act like the ones you see in yaoi. (Same goes for yuri.)

...you know, this has always been the opposite to me. The whole yaoi thing, that is. In my own adventures in the anime...world (?) I've found fans who like yaoi and yuri...but don't support legitimate homosexual peoples. I've always found it to be a mild-tolerance. Maybe because the two guys/girls weren't OMGHAWT or FEM/FEM QUEEN/BUTCH or for whatever reason. Β It's always boggled my mind, upset me, and made me feel like a complete outcast from people who belonged to the same fandoms as me. We were supposed to always be the "weird" group and "proud to be." Oh wait, you're a REAL lesbian? Sorry, you're too weird for us.

I was bullied by people like this when I was in middle-high school, all the way through graduation. A group of gays used to shove their hands into my mouth when I turned around, and ask me if I liked the taste of a gay when I wasn't into gays myself.
They would trip me, shove me down, chase me, and steal my things. And if I said a word about it, 'it was only because I didn't like gays.'
They harassed me for having eyebrows that were too big, saying that I should be a gay man myself, that I was no female.
I lived in hell for this kind of person.Β
