Description Hi there guys! Love Medusa. I remember it was the first mythological monster that caught my mind, first when I saw the old Clash of the Titans flick (stop motion rocks!) and then in castlevania ganes (still my favorite enemy along legion). I have a couple of versions more of Medusa on the gallery but I tried to do something diferent with hair/snakes compo on this one.
I hope you like it

LET´S WIKIATTACK!!

Medusa (Greek: Μέδουσα (Médousa), "guardian, protectress") was a monstrous chthonic female character; gazing upon her would turn onlookers to stone. She was beheaded by the hero Perseus, who thereafter used her head as a weapon, until giving it to the goddess Athena to place on her shield. In classical antiquity and today, the image of the head of Medusa finds expression in the evil-averting device known as the Gorgoneion. She also has two gorgon sisters. The three Gorgon sisters — Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale — were children of Typhon and Echidna, in each case chthonic monsters from an archaic world.

In a late version of the Medusa myth, related by the Roman poet Ovid, Medusa was originally a beautiful maiden, "the jealous aspiration of many suitors," priestess in Athena's temple, but when she was raped by the "Lord of the Sea" Poseidon in Athena's temple, the enraged goddess transformed her beautiful hair to serpents and she made her face so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it would turn a man to stone.

This drawing is awesome!

Medusa was one ugly S.O.B. her myth was originated by the Berbers.

Most sources describe her as the daughter of Phorcys and Ceto ,[2] though the author Hyginus makes her the daughter of Gorgon and Ceto.[3] According to Hesiod and Aeschylus , she lived and died on an island named Sarpedon, somewhere near Cisthene . The 2nd-century BCE novelist Dionysios Skytobrachion puts her somewhere in Libya , where Herodotus the Greek Historian had said the Berbers originated her myth, as part of their religion . Herodotus knows his sh!t.

In classical antiquity the image of the head of Medusa appeared in the evil-averting device known as the Gorgoneion .

According to Joseph Campbell :

The legend of Perseus beheading Medusa means, specifically, that "the Hellenes overran the goddess's chief shrines" and "stripped her priestesses of their Gorgon masks", the latter being apotropaic faces worn to frighten away the profane.

Because women weren't known as warriors. The Amazons were mistaken men with long hair. Palaephatus , who was trying to rationalize the Greek myths in his work On Unbelievable Tales or On Incredible Tales (Ancient Greek : Περὶ ἀπίστων ἱστοριῶν), stated that the Amazons most probably were men mistaken for women by their enemies because they wore clothing which reached their feet, tied up their hair in headbands and shaved their beards, and also, since they did not exist during his time, most probably they did nοt exist in the past either.

Ugly girls do it best! Medusa has sometimes appeared as representing notions of scientific determinism and nihilism , especially in contrast with romantic idealism

Here's her real butt ugly face.

Because of what happened with Medusa, I can't really forgive Athena.  Little Ms. "I-Turn-Rape-Victims-Into-Horrifying-Monsters."  I'm aware of the version of the myth where it was consensual, but that feels more like something a victimizer would say so as to blame the victim.

Anyway, great job with this.

though most gorgons(medusa and her sisters) are said to hideous some say that was their beauty that turned their victims to stone. This is a good portrayal of that belief.
