Description This drawing is actually a few years old, and I just recently reworked the color, which was terrible in its original state. I was tempted to switch out the girl's head for something non-anime, since I don't really draw in that style, unless I'm being paid to, but I decided to leave it. I know how much you DA freaks love anime.....

The colours are fantastic, and the beast's face is just a winner.

Very nice. I like the style just fine. Someone mentioned changing the expression but I love it. It gives it an almost animalistic feel. Wonderful!

This is a really incredible image. There is so much action in it. I can almost hear the war-cry of this leather-clad manga-chick. Very fantastic expression and character-design! The folds in the skin of that dino-creature are just incredible.

I love the outfit design. It is very exotic as well as having, in my opinion, a bit of a Tomb Raider air about it. -- I also love how the spiked tail of the dino-creature seems to mimic the hair of the woman [or perhaps visa versa.]

The rocks in the background are incredible as well. They have a lot of shine and smoothness to them. They really do look like cave-rock.

All in all, this is a great fantasy image that draws from so many areas [dinosaurs, warrior women, anime. . .], yet remains completely unique and visually outstanding. Excellent work.

You have an increadible style, your sense of detail is just wonderful, it has been a treat to surf through your gallery. I would be interested in seeing how these start out as the colors are so vibrant. I have not had as much success working straight from pencils. Wonderful work keep it up!

I think you'd be really surprised if you saw how the color stage started out on most of my pieces. It starts off very flat and dark. Of course, I can't tell you much more than that, otherwise I'd be giving away too many secrets......

Cursed secrets.

Color always starts flat the chiaroscurro comes after.

Really interesting. For the coloring, mean. What is the creature called? I want to know!

GeorgeSellas In reply to Lorail [2007-11-13 02:55:53 +0000 UTC]

Um, well, it's kind of a cross between a bat, a shark, a tiger and a crocodile but I can't say it has a name. Feel free to come up with something if you like. And thanks!

When I first saw the title on this, I spent ten minutes trying to figure out where the fake bird was in the picture. No more commenting at DA before fully waking up.

Well, the good news is that the body shading on this, especially around the upper body, is wayyyy too detailed and tasty for most toss-away anime/manga work I've seen, so you're safe there.

And honestly, if more of the anime/manga work here had this degree of depth, action and movement to it, it probably wouldn't have such a bad rep. Like the others said, I still likes it... it reminds me of a couple of my wild elves, only much better drawn.

I did the same thing looking for the bird. Coffee is a must, I'm affraid. And yes while there is alot of bad anime/manga style it serves to accentuate the good.

Anime has infested the majority of Devart. lol. *avoids attack*

Usually I tend to stay away from the anime/manga style, but you've made it look quite nice, the colour schemes, together with the crazy looking beast work really well together. The overall mood is emphasized quite nicely too

Well, I don't think her face looks bad at all!
(Says the manga freak) Er.

...That being said, I really like this piece and your colouring is ace. I love semi-mono colour schemes and it all comes together wonderfully in this piece.

It's also interesting to go back and look at older stuff, though. Some of it's cringe-worthy. (Mine is at least. Hah hah.) Maybe I can persuade you with internet cookies to post some older stuff?

GeorgeSellas In reply to cilka [2007-10-21 12:59:21 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! It's a really big "if", but I certainly will. It would be tricky to work out because her body type is very anime as well --very long and kinda skinny -- basically Shirow style like your sis said. If I were to switch out the head to something more my usual style, it would most likely look strange on that particular body.

This has a really nice Shirow-esque feel to it - the man who consistently proves that scads of details and monolithic beasties go surprisingly well with scantily clad manga-style heroines. Plus, variety is always a plus, it impresses potential clients more.

The colors in this are really nice. My favorite part is, indeed, the faux hawk, it's a strikingly surprising element in a drawing where you think you'll know everything that you're going to see.

My second favorite thing: the weapons made of bone. Very nice designs on those! Someone should be looking to you for the weapon designs in the new Conan game.

GeorgeSellas In reply to elle-chan [2007-10-21 02:55:38 +0000 UTC]

In a similar vein, I love reading your comments because you always pick up on stuff that no one else does.

Her outfit, if you care to call several strips of leather an outfit, went through several stages of redesign, but the faux hawk and bone weapons were a given from the get-go. The sword and spear were conceived as being fashioned from the jaw bones of some made-up dino-type crocodile, hence all the teeth sticking out. She has a little bit of African-inspired attire too, in the form of her necklaces and furry ankle-warmers.

I think I drew this around the same time that I was finishing up all those character designs and the cover illustration for you, so I must've been in a Shirow-esque mood! It's just taken me an obscenely long time to get the color the way I wanted it.

elle-chan In reply to GeorgeSellas [2007-10-22 18:38:55 +0000 UTC]

I thought it looked like a jawbone! She definitely doesn't look like she lives in a time period which knew how to properly utilize them, but I think it would've been great if she had a shield made out of a headplate akin to that of the styracosaurus or pachyrhinosaurus.

GeorgeSellas In reply to elle-chan [2007-10-23 02:07:38 +0000 UTC]

I love styracosaurus! It is the best ceratopsian dino after all and it was my favorite dino as a kid too. I remember putting together a model from a kit and the legs never wanted to stay glued on. Poor, legless styraco.....

And I like that idea too. If I ever do another piece with this character, maybe I'll work that in.

Velociraptors were my favorite until they started putting ridiculous looking fur and feathers on them, then I just couldn't love them anymore. Dinosaurs are supposed to be scaley and dragon-ish looking, and are not supposed to remind you of drag-queens in dire need of lotion and a wig.

Well, it's probably a jungle cave and very warm in there, so if she had on a giant parka or something, she'd suffer from heat exhaustion. That's my reasoning and I'm sticking with it.....

Thank you!
