Description I don't usually give a lot of background information on my pieces, and truth be told, most of the time there isn't much anyway. It's typically the image itself that interests me, and people are free to interpret that image as they like. But this piece was a little different in that it's based on a pre-existing piece of art so I thought I'd give you the basics.

This piece is based on a small statue found by Sir Arthur Evans at the ruins of Knossos on the island of Crete in 1903. At the time of the statue's creation, about 1600 BCE, Crete was home to the Minoan civilization, and researchers believe that their culture was matriarchal.ย  We know it as the "Snake Goddess" but when Evans found it, he identified it as one of her votaries, or priestesses. The true Snake Goddess, he claimed, was represented by a different statue; one with a tall, cylindrical headdress and several snakes coiling around her body.

Both the Snake Goddess and Votary statues were missing parts when they were discovered, and it's debated whether the crown topped with the cat figurine was even a part of the Votary statue in the first place.

Due to the lack of historical records, much of what archaeologists know of the "Snake Goddess" is conjecture. If you're an ancient history nerd like me, you'll find it interesting too, and if not, well.....just stare at the picture.

Thanks very much!ย  I will look into offering it as a print.ย  I need to see if my original file is large enough to do so.ย  Please send me a note and let me know what approximate size you are interested in.

I am making a comic on the Minotaur myth! Your interpretation of Eileithyia gave me a lot of inspiration! Thank you so much, it is really Minoan - free and whimsical. Love the style and the way you put the light. The whole composition is so far from the stable statues of her - I quite like your version)

Interesting. I was actually doing research on the original when I ran into your work! I've only just begun, and it's still in debate if I will continue or change topics, so there's really not much I can say now. Well, except that I'm glad I've come across your own take on the original. :>

Thank you! I now understand why I've gotten a lot of comments from researchers who happen to find this artwork. I just Googled "Minoan Snake Goddess" and my piece comes up on the top row. Now I feel special!

Yeah, it comes up pretty fast and stands out amongst the pictures of the statue or remakes of the statue. Your work stands out though, and I certainly thought it'd be worth a look! Still do.

I hate that we have sunk to the point where the only way to protect original art work is to slap a DA symbol over it.

Other than that, EXCELLENT piece!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

GeorgeSellas In reply to Chroias [2011-04-04 18:52:39 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know. I've gotten several comments about that. I've experienced problems with art theft in the past (right here on DA, as a matter of fact) so I feel like I have no other choice.

Maybe some day I'll get around to creating a custom, less intrusive watermark.

Glad you enjoyed the piece!

EvilReaper [2011-03-04 21:59:53 +0000 UTC]

This is fantastic! You have really made her look more imposing and intimidating than the original, which in my mind is how a dipiction of a goddess (or her priestess) looks best. Wonderful work. The overall style is amazing as well.

GeorgeSellas In reply to EvilReaper [2011-03-05 19:02:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed it. I always liked the concept of the original statue, but the snakes were too....dinky, I guess is a good word. And her pose was very static and symmetrical. So I tried to change up those aspects that I didn't like when I did my version. Thanks again!

Thanks very much! I remember when I was doing research for this that there was a debate as to whether the animal on her headpiece was a cat or an owl, so I tried to make it a cross between the two. Glad you enjoyed it. It's still one of my personal favorites too.

right, not much Agean work was verry easy to decript, especialy not the Faince work since it was so fragial, a mirical the figures lasted all these years. sorry for the late reasponce, propibly so old of a comment, i only just got back into my deviant account :S

I love all things Minoan, Have since i was a little kid and this picture is so perfect! So much of the art they left is so calm and sedate, it is cool to see such movement and action. Instant

GeorgeSellas In reply to BobbieBerendson [2009-05-19 00:25:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much! Glad you liked it. Even though there are a lot of static poses in Minoan art, they always used graceful lines, which make me think of movement and dancing specifically. (Even the bulls look like they're doing dancer-like leaps!)

I was also influenced by the opening to the Athens Olympics where they had the performers dressed up like characters from Minoan art.

Wow, this is a very dynamic interpretation of the piece. Though as a fellow Ancient History nerd, I have to say; who suggested the figure on the crown was a cat?

My class was debating this and we thought it was more likely a stoat, kind of like a rabbit, that burrows underground. The stoat and snakes are both connected to the volcano as they can feel the vibrations before it erupts and acts as a warning. This is advocated by the fact that there were no bodies found at Akrotiri on Thera (Santorini).

GeorgeSellas In reply to randomaniac [2009-02-09 18:23:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.

As for the animal on the crown, I've seen it described as everything from some kind of cat (a lion cub, panther, or even a small type like a house cat), an owl or some other kind of bird and now from you as a stoat or rabbit.

That's why I made mine look like a cross between a cat and a bird. That way you can interpret it as you like. If there were definitive proof, I suppose I could go back and change it, but for the time being, I think it'll stay as the bird-cat thing.

Oooh, I've got a necklace modeled after that statue. I get a lot of enjoyment out of it. People see it and go 'Oh, that's this or that goddess from this ancient culture' which is usually miles away from Crete. I've yet to run into anyone who actually recognizes it, and who knows that virtually nothing is known about it.

Diggin' this image. You made her outfit rock, not to mention her expression!

Undoubtedly my favourite from your gallery.

I prefer this for two reasons: how the drawing is done, obviously, and because I am historian of the Antiquity... and isn't very usual to see drawings inspired by the Minoan culture.

Well fact!

P.S.: The "Snake Goddess" is the evolution of the primitive goddess-mothers from the Neolithic and even the ancestor of the Greek goddesses of fertility like Demeter (ฮ”ฮทฮผฮฎฯ„ฮทฯ.

They ARE, as a matter of fact. The original statue doesn't have them, but I wanted people to be able to see this without getting by a mature content filter, hence the very slight cover-up.
