For ConceptArt.org 's weelky CHOW competition.This was CHOW #100 - Medusa the Queen
Edit (01.16.2008) - Turns out I won CHOW 100. Woo!
Medusa was a beautiful nymph, loved and pursued by many, though she spurned all her suitors. The God Poseidon was even entranced with her beauty, so much so that he accosted her in Athena's own temple and raped the lovely creature. Athena, so enraged over this defilement of her sanctuary, sought her revenge. She could not lash out at her great Uncle, so instead she turned the nymph into a hideous beast, so that any man who should look upon her would be turned to stone.
Medusa, ashamed, angry, and already pregnant with Poseidon's child, Pegasus, went into hiding, where the great "hero" Perseus later found and beheaded her.
Was going for an overload of symbolism and what not. And learning how to REALLY paint with my PhotoShop. Go PhotoShop! Also had to bang this one out, as I was dashing off to Seattle for the CA Workshop. Man, my mind is still reeling, and I am running about like a headless chicken sending out resumes and portfolios... So much to do, so little time.

And thank for the story, I have read Greek myths but I did not know this concerning the "origin" of Medusa the monster.Β

note that Perseus was pretty much blackmailed into going after Medusa. A king was threatening to force Perseus's mother to marry him against her will and said he'd back off if Perseus brought Medusa's head. Perseus is one of the only Greek heroes that wasn't particularly an asshole.

Whoa. Incredible work here. Sorry to sound ignorant, but I never heard that first part about how Medusa became a gorgon before. So I did some research. HOLY SHIII... Olympus, you scary... (and crazy...)

Yeah, if you read back through the un-sanatized versions of greek myths, the gods were making all kinds of strange babies. For example, and depending on whose version you read, Zeus seduced Leda in the form of a swan so that she laid two large golden eggs (!!!) one of which hatched Helen of Troy and her twin the great hero Pollux, the other hatched Castor and Clytemnestra, the children of Leda's mortal husband.

I love the detail of the mosaic! I presume that's Athena looking down so angrily on the left and Poseidon looking at her with lust? I love this piece, she is beautiful! You can actually see someone who befits the word beautiful and causes the gods themselves trouble rather than art of those I wouldn't consider, 'beauitful'! Amazing!
