Today is Sonic's 27th Anniversary, and my drawing from this occasion stems back to something that happened not long after I got into the Sonic series seventeen years ago. Before becoming a huge fan of a blue hedgehog, I was a fan of a blue tank engine named Thomas.

Within a few months of getting into the Sonic series, I decided to put Thomas & Friends behind me as I felt the age difference between these two series was too great. In fact, back in 2006 or so, I made this lousy drawing to illustrate my feelings.

A few years later, however, I came across some amazing Thomas & Friends fanart here at DeviantArt. At first, I tried to ignore it, but the art was just too well-done. Then, out of the blue, an idea popped into my mind, an idea that would bring these two seemingly age-differentiated worlds a little closer - draw up some Sonic OC's based off of some of my childhood favorite Thomas & Friends characters. I started with Flora, Toby, and Mavis as a gift for a friend here.

Today, I don't idolize Thomas & Friends anywhere as much as I used to. In fact, I no longer like listening to much of the music of the series as it still seems quite infantile. Even so, I did watch some more recent episodes on YouTube to revisit my childhood and check out what I had been missing out on all these years (as well as listen to the voices of the locomotives as I noticed the series had since gone CGI), and I must tell you how disappointing they were. They were just basically the same thing happening over and over and over again, and I'm thinking to myself, "A five-year-old probably wouldn't enjoy this let alone Reverend Awdry!" Some more recent stories were better in my opinion, especially as some of them were based off of the Railway Series books that the Reverend wrote.

Despite my heavy criticism toward the way the series is today, some newer locomotives have been introduced that I thought would make terrific Sonic OC's. One such locomotive was Victor. As his Hispanic origins were something I found very interesting as it added to the spectrum of the Thomas & Friends franchise, I figured he would make a good Sonic OC. It's a shame I only drew him only once before, and nearly six years ago too.

Recently, I noticed that some artists such as Nictrain123 , PilloTheStar , and my good friend TobyandMavisforever have a lot of fanart of both Thomas and Sonic in their gallery. I've also seen many other of my fellow Sonic artists crossover the two series. So, I figured that for Sonic's 27th anniversary, why not draw Sonic himself with some of my T&F-inspired Sonic OCs, namely Victor and Toby? It's something that I never would've imagined doing even ten years ago (even now, I'm still a bit surprised that I'm doing this), but it doesn't look like something Sonic minds at all. In fact, I can't help but wonder if he grew up watching Thomas & Friends when he was younger. Guys, don't ask me if he did. Ask him.

With all that said, I wish everyone's favorite blue hedgehog a very happy 27th anniversary!
