Smiling ( though what this mean is for anyone to guess ) takes an almost default expression for Mei, who puts up a constantly cheerful front as to avoid the difficult questions and maintain his relationships easily. He doesn't have an issue getting along with most people but holds a certain level of distance from the people around him. He often does things without giving his actions much forethought and says the first things that come to mind, following his whims simply to amuse himself and doesn't bother justifying himself toward anyone but his closest friends. Holds a complete disregard toward the concept of family, and his preferences and opinions change on a seemingly day to day basis, taking time to stabilize -- though once it does, it will remain unchanged for a long, long time.

Though appearing unaffected by just about everything, Mei prefers to show his distaste through snide comments and underhanded actions; when he does show his emotions, it tends to be overly intense and sudden as he doesn't give much warning to his moods (though his actions do tend to overstate the cause, and are often extremely excessive). Happens to be extremely loyal and always willing to be a good listener, if his friends happen to need one.

Mei Kamiya grew up in a largely empty and dysfunctional household within the city, with a set of parents who were never home or constantly at war each other. Though they seemed to minimally care for him (provide money, provide shelter, provide food), he was otherwise neglected and as such developed a detachment from his family. ( Or as he tend to put it, he didn't believe in fairy tales because fairy tales never existed for him. ) Always prone to being short on empathy, his family situation only exacerbated this trait; as a child, he almost never was able to understand the other children and reacted in unfamiliar ways that isolated him further -- as a result, he becomes attached to those that choose to approach him and persevere in attempting to keep his company.

Though it's a rare occurrence and always far between.

Upon entering middle school, he consciously began observing the other children and in high school, he refashioned his own self to be someone who was likable and sympathetic, though this was rarely the case and in terms of home life he still kept people at arms length. Through high school, he was generally popular, and he found that he fit in rather well when he chose to (and he much of him comes from a conscious effort to keep this front), though he quickly grew bored of his surrounding, the simple hum drum of high school life, and tended to shift interests often; however, his group of friends remained largely consistent through these years -- a much needed constant in his life.

Post-graduation, Mei makes the decision to study elsewhere than the city he had grown up in, desiring a change in scenery and he finds himself in a rather quaint town with an acceptable university. When he graduates from university, he makes a decision to find work before continuing further with any form of education and, simply on a whim, decides to apply for the local coffee shop. It seemed like a pleasant job to have for a while, to make a paycheck and gain some much needed skills before returning to paying for exorbitant school fees.
