Description First painting after Illustration Academy. I wanted to try painting something other than big guys with tusks, for a change. I know there's some sort of narrative I can piece together from this image, but I haven't figured out where I want to go with this. It's a "conversation" between a jackalope and a baseball cap.

For this one I tried Doug Chayka's suggestion to do an underdrawing with dry media before going over it with watercolor, and I think it really made a difference in terms of creating some separation in values. I used a sepia Cretacolor pencil to create tone and texture in the fur and in the rocks.

I didn't want to lean too heavily on line for separation between elements, so in some parts the ink lines almost fade away completely behind the watercolor, gouache, and casein. I worked a lot more fast and loose with the watercolors and tried not to get caught up with details.

Watercolor, ink, gouache, casein, pastel on Arches 140 lb. CP watercolor paper.

I am not sure if the muted 'softness' of the colours and edges, plus the expression but somehow this makes me think of a transformee who has one last remnant of his Human life left to gaze on as a reminder...

I see what you mean. I think it's interesting how different people come up with different narratives for the same scene. Truth be told I didn't really have anything in mind when I was drawing it or painting it.

Great painting man, the colours go together so smoothly, you really have mastered watercolour illustrations. I think you could make amazing fantasy type children illustration books.

Thank you!

I love jackalopes! Probably my favorite mythical creature right next to gryphons.

The white streaks in his fur look good; and I think that there is inded a visible difference to the colours here, it's great that you're experimenting with new techniques; I think the blended lines work well with furry creatures (as apose to a black outline or something more defined).

Aw it's kinda cute. :3 lol I like your quality in these images. Some people just cannot pull off watercolors, too and really you do, so good work there! He looks kinda afraid of the cap, actually. XD

I saw one of those once. Jackalopes are very shy and secretive creatures. The one time I caught a glimpse of one, he was peeing in my shoes that I had left outside.

What's sad is I own like 3 of the novelty mounted heads of these things. Nice detailing with the gouache by the way.
