Description Another orc going "Rawr".

I tried Bainbridge illustration board for this one instead of my usual Crescent 310, and I must say I'm not a big fan of it. Any scrubbing or blotting I did started to lift the surface of the paper along with the water and paint, so it started looking tacky after about two layers of washes. It also sucked up the paint so that I couldn't lift any of it without messing up the board itself, and it threw my values off especially in rendering the skin.

Anyway, this started as a doodle in my sketchbook. Yes, I do draw orcs more often than some of you think. I don't hate on them all the time. I'm tempted to paint another one since this one didn't come out so great. I'd just need to find some time to do it.

Watercolour, dry pastel on Bainbridge 2200 Cold Press Illustration Board.

Orcs are, of course, splendid (and subject to some terribly unfair bad press, don'chaknow), and your green-skinned guys are especially excellent. I love the look on this guy's face - it's like he's just finished hacking a bunch of enemies to bits, and he's rather cross at not having anyone else to introduce to his axe now he's got into his stride. The storybook-style colouring really suits him, too. Aceness!

even though this seems focused on one color alone it is highly detailed, to the point of being exquisite. it is likely the use of multiple shades as well as various others techniques featured.

Technical problems with the board aside, this came out really well. This reminds me of a picture that one of my former employers put on his office door whenever he didn't want the staff to bother him.

Jeez, I swear, you're a frickin' master at drawing the male form. I mean, probably not the average male body-type, but you've got this power over actually drawing muscles look the way muscles look, and yeah. I'm jealous.

Looking good mate. I really do like the sensitivity you have when using watercolours. But I'd still like a bit more pop personally
Maybe once you get it to this stage you could hatch over with decent colour pencils to add some shadows, and possibly use watercolour or acrylics that isn't watered down for some highlights?
Just a thought there, for a little experimentation

I like the texture on his (pants?) sorry I forget the word for it, but that looks good. XD

Switching to a new kind of paper or paint is usually challenging and frustrating, especially when the paper doesn't hold the paint well. That happened to me in class the other day, little bits of the paper would roll off into these stringy parts.

I think you did well Mongo, keep pushing yourself.

I understand the paper caused problems. But I would suggest going back and adding some darker shadows as it looks a little flat at the moment. Good job on the perspective with the hand on the left though.

Yeah I might go back with the charcoal and add some darker values.

Have you ever tried using watersoluble coloured pencils. I only mention it because we sell them at my artshop and I was thinking they could be a nice way of adding both wet and dry detail to watercolour work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GH-MoNGo In reply to Hungrysparrow [2008-02-03 19:11:49 +0000 UTC]

I've tried them a few times, but sometimes I can't get them to lift from the paper, and a lot of them contain fugitive dyes. I may revisit them again, though, if I can find some more lightfast ones. Thanks for the suggestion.
