Description Painting of a photograph by Ben Shahn, circa 1930.

The method used here is called "single process", where watercolours are applied in one layer and one layer only. As soon as the layer is dry, you can't go back and make corrections or apply subsequent layers. My professor let me "cheat" a bit, though, and there is a second layer laid in a tiny little part of the painting.

Limited palette: Cobalt Blue (PB28), Burnt Umber (PBr7), Quinacridone Rose (PV19), Nickel Dioxine (PY153), Disazo Brown (PBr41). Watercolours on Arches 140 lb. CP watercolour paper.

The lady on the left turns out well! How long did it take to finish this painting?

About 45 minutes.

This came out really well, Darrenn. Are you doing any other single process paintings?

Not really. They can be rather tedious sometimes.

One other thing - if I cover over the right half of the picture, the remaining half looks really good. So there's certainly talent in there.

Also, the perspective of the background is a bit off relative to the figures. It's a fairly strongly overhead view, but the figures are seen from the side.

Please take this as the constructive critique it's intended as, not as an attack!!!

I like the old lady, but the younger lady seems to have a somewhat deformed shoulder, and not as much definition (no distinct cheekbones, inside of mouth uncoloured, no shading) on her face.

For a first go at a new technique, it's not bad, and the old lady came off very well. But it'd need more work in it for you to get really good at it.

Ouch! Those are some painful limitations, but you did pull it off very well. I agree that the lady on the left looks like she could be a storybook character for a children's book of some kind.

Now these are some orcs to be feared!

It's pretty good, but I would think about taking a ink pen to those pencil lines and see if you can't bring them out a bit more.

GH-MoNGo In reply to spacecowboy76 [2008-02-03 19:12:46 +0000 UTC]

I've heard that suggestion before, but I've also heard that I should downplay the lines to make the rendering stand out more. I'm not sure which one would fit my methods better.

spacecowboy76 In reply to GH-MoNGo [2008-02-03 20:23:15 +0000 UTC]

Instead of ink maybe you could thicken it up with a graphite pencil. The lady on the left looks good but the one on the right is a bit wispy.

GH-MoNGo In reply to spacecowboy76 [2008-02-03 20:34:42 +0000 UTC]

It's cause of the Single Process. I did the one on the right first, but I got the values wrong on her. I couldn't go back and lift out any of the pigment or layer over it, so I was stuck with it.

Excellent. I particularly appreciate the old woman.
The right part of the woman (her left arm) is a bit odd, though. o_O
You master the watercolor, I like the result.

I love how the older one reminds me of the woman in the Pickles (I think that's the name) comic strip in the Washington Post. Overall it's very calming...wonder how it would work as a desktop.

Wow....I really like it, even though there isn't many layers in it. For some reason it gives it an old feeling to it, as if the painting is centuries old and the paint is starting to fall apart. I dunno, I have a book that looks like this and it is called the Red Shoes. I love the gruesome story and your painting reminded me of it. Good job, man! ^_^

You would do really well as an illustrator for children's books. Kudos, dude! The painting is totally boss.

I saw this last night but I wanted something else to say than just, "thats awesome, brudda!" and so forth.

I like this because its a change from what I normally see from you. Especially considering I've never seen you really draw a female, realistic or cartoony.

I think this really suits you. The lines on this seem really soft and go with the whole painting.
