Description I bought this painting on Ebay in 2004. Labeled "Great Sage Equaling Heaven" (ink and colors on paper, 28 x 47 in), it is a painting of Sun Wukong the Monkey King from the highly popular 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West (西游记, Xiyouji), or as it is known in Japan, Saiyuki. It depicts the immortal monkey during his battle with the heavenly army. The inscription and red block seal states that it was painted by the female artist Yang Ruifen of the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in Autumn of the Jiashen year (i.e. 2004). Jiashen refers to an ancient Chinese dating system that assigns elements and animals to each year within a 60 year period. It coincides with the "Yang Wood Monkey."

I recently discovered (as of late 2016) that the piece is based on one of several paintings appearing in the book Journey to the West: Havoc in Heaven (西游记之闹天宫, Xiyouji zhi nao tiangong) (1956) by noted artist Liu Jiyou (刘继卣, 1918-1983). Scans of the paintings can be seen here.

One of Liu's pieces is a direct copy of one of the many 19th-century paintings adorning the crossbeams in the Long Corridor of the Summer Palace in Beijing, China.

This suggests the artist drew the inspiration for his paintings from this place.

How bizarre!!  I have the EXACT SAME painting up on my wall too.  It's enormous - as big as me.  I ordered it from China, handpainted.  I guess they must have a template they work to!

I just discovered the origin of our paintings. Check out the updated description above, more specifically the second half.

Mine is the same size. Where did you order yours from? I got mine on ebay back in 2004.

Have you ever read the novel? I'm a big fan.

Yep, eBay also, and also about the same time!

Yep, I have read the Arthur Whalley translation.  I'm also onto the second book of a four volume set, which is a markedly different translation, in that it seems to be complete.

This one:

The Arthur Whalley version was abridged and contained in one volume.  Love it though!

How about you?

I've read the W.J.F. Jenner edition (the one you linked to) at least twice, but that was years ago. I'm currently reading Prof. Anthony Yu's version, which many academics consider to be a far more accurate translation.

Thanks for the heads up!  I'm going to have to put those volumes on my Xmas list. Over here they're £25 each, paperback - that's a lot!!!

Ya, they are pretty expensive. I saved up for my copies. Anthony Yu's original translation from the 1980s is much cheaper. The one I linked to is the revised edition with an updated introduction and scholarship.
