For Day 4 of Phanniemay14I took the theme for this day in the 'redesign' direction, or rather 'reconceptualization'. I always wondered why Danny Phantom, a Nickelodeon show, didn't take more advantage of the ectoplasm imagery on a network so enamored with green slime. Although it might have been a bit of a stretch in the 'body horror' direction for Danny to have had a transformation that looks like this, I think you could also argue that there were plenty of more disturbing things that happened... I'm looking at you, "The Ultimate Enemy".

holy shite was that episode dark, I heard it was a rather dark episode but I didn't expect it to be that dark o.o
hmm let's see oh yeah, accident at the Nasty Burger that results in Danny witnessing his loved ones die, becomes grief struck and seeks vlad to separate his ghost half and human half, in other words his humanity, ghost half goes crazy and ends up killing his human half, etc

I agree there was a lot of darker potential for this show but recently I sometimes wonder that if there was, there wouldn't be such a cool fandom to come up with new ideas ourselves and expand on the dark tones that were only hinted in the show that was aimed at children. I don't think it's a bad thing that DP didn't push the darkness aspect to its limits, but after this comment I would also like to see what Butch could do if he did a series that didn't hold back ^^

It's fine about the long answer, trust me, I am the QUEEN of getting carried away! ^.^ And huh, well I guess after years of accidentally stumbling upon disturbing fanfics has immunized me cuz I love to watch that episode without feeling weirded out in the slightest XD! really though i have to admit its a lot easier, now that im older, to look at cartoons and notice all this extra stuff about why its disturbing to me NOW, when as a kid the only part that really was scary to me was that one transformation sequence. mostly its the ideaΒ of the situation that is disturbing rather than what actually happens in the show, and after having more life experiences since i was 10 years old (and taking some english/lit classes) it's a lot easier to overanalyze some of the stuff haha

Don't forget that Danny's now evil ghost half also, kills his human half. And Vlad implies that he did it rather brutally, seeing as when Danny asks he simply says "Some things are better left unsaid"

oh man where do i start haha
tl;dr it was an episode that ended up being notorious for how dark it was, even compared to other DP episodes; DP already had a somewhat more mature tone than other cartoons of the time, so when this episode aired out of nowhere the way it did, it was kind of a shock for most kids/people (me included)
but if you want more specific stuff heres a bunch (i tried to keep it non-spoilery in case you havent seen it yet; i recommend this ep highly because its very good)
-the premise of the episode is that an accident at the nasty burger, the local fast food joint, kills (yes, KILLS) everyone he knows and cares about.Β
-this accident is partially (inadvertently) caused by danny himself. the guilt and utter sadness he felt from losing his loved ones leads to danny turning to vlad to rip out his own humanity altogether in order to separate his ghost and human halves and banish the hurt forever (eesh!)
-said sequence results in danny's ghost half transforming into an evil ghost monster, without morals or remorse, creating a bad future where danny grows up to be the most evil horrible ghost of all time. (YIKES)
-this entire scene is extremely horrific, and would EASILY be the scariest scene in any children's cartoon i've ever seen, if courage the cowardly dog wasn't already a show.
-danny's evil self goes back in time to secure his existence, while simultaneously stranding danny in this bad future to keep him out of the way. everyone hates danny because his evil self already ruined everything (and i do mean everything, from the ghost zone to the human world...Β literallyΒ everywhereΒ seems to be gone except for amity park, which had a ghost shield surrounding the whole town)
-theres a good ending at least but holy shit its got some pretty heavy stuff for a kids show. most kids/teens already worry about tests/cheating/their future so it was Pretty Real and still is if you watch it now
