Description Watercolours and a little bit of graphite pencil.

I've been meaning to paint a somewhat realistic and detailed horse for ages but somehow I managed to avoid it until now. Originally I was just going to find a good stock photo on DA and paint from that but then I decided that I would much rather paint a horse I actually know and like. So this is my favourite horse at the local riding school. She's a little grumpy but I love her anyway.
The problem with painting an animal you know is that it then turns into a portrait and portraits are so very very hard. I put a lot of work into this, trying to do her justice, but in the end I'm not sure if the likeness is strong enough. I'm still pretty pleased with it. ^_^

The horse I ride is similar. He's a grumpy devil, especially to the other horses, but I love him to bits. This picture reminds me of him.

It's funny how horses have really quite strong personalities.

Even funnier, when one aspect of their personality basically involves trying to eat the other horses!

Veeery pretty

The texture of the skin is so real.
You choose a great background color, it goes so well with the horse.

Maybe only the eyes look so sad  ...I would wanna give her a hug.

Thank you, I was full of doubts while painting this but I'm pleased with the end result. About halfway through, I thought that I would have been better off with a different medium and that I wouldn't be able to make this work with watercolours. Somehow the watercolours gave me this amazing skin texture though, so I'm happy.

But yes, the eyes do look sad. I think many horses have sad looking eyes. Somehow the shape of the wrinkles around the eyes makes them look sad.

You made a great choice with watercolors

The horses have a deep, smart look in their eyes.
The wrinkles really made it look sad.
Maybe just a tiny little white dot (light reflection) in the eyes would make it more alive, sparkle. It's always the cherry on the cake. It gives life to the eyes.

But no matter what you should be really proud at this artwork
