It's because Wally is damn sexy. Same reason everyone uses Robin. Discussion closed. Love ya!

Lol, it's because Wally has no muscles---perfect bishounen body!
But most importantly, he has spiky red anime hair!
I'm kidding, of course---I have no idea WHY Wally's the "prime target" as you put it. Though I will be completely politically incorrect and say that the exclusion of Aqualad might have something to do with race.
I'm completely guilty of this race thing---As you can see, there are mostly Caucasian or Caucasian-looking people in my dA gallery. I'm trying to work on that....not drawing the SAME people over and over. It will take me some time---I need to work on drawing middle aged and elderly people, too!
But I've always thought it's funny: Japanese anime is all too willing to give characters crazy eye colors and crazy hair colors but the skin tone is (about 99% of the time) LIGHT and not dark. I suppose racism's a big issue in the Western mentality, too. Notice that the fan pairings in Teen Titans are HEAVY on Robin x Starfire and Beast Boy x Raven....but where's Cyborg in all this? Seriously, it's a problem. So I think it's a bold move on Young Justice's part to have Kaldur be the leader of the group, rather than just giving him a side role.
Okay, sorry, I'll stop ranting. I love your drawings, and you're so good at capturing other people's styles! Your sketches totally look like they came from the drawing board of the actual show! Keep up the great work, as always

Haha, quite the well-thought-out response. I guess when you look at traditional/non-western anime from the standpoint of its source, it makes sense that they would only portray the races that they normally come in contact with. I can't say from experience, of course, but I assume there are few people of African heritage over in their region of the world. So it kinda makes sense to me that they'd be less likely to include characters that their primary writers/viewers can't relate to. I mean, how often do you see a Native American in anime? Maybe someone Irish? Yeah.
As for Cyborg's non-shipping, I'm not so sure it's a racial thing, at least not on the part of the fans. I mean, the series really doesn't present Cyborg as a particularly romantically-charged character. Generally his only qualities that the writers bring to light are his crudeness (see: anything food/belch/stankball related), over-zealous/boisterous humor, and at times, seriousness. He gets a few moments of glory where interest is suggested between him and Jinx, that chick from the past, and I've heard even Bumblebee (though I honestly don't remember much interaction between them...) But those are also the characters that he's shipped with, and given that they're all side-characters, none of them get much lime light, and thusly not much notice in the community. Certainly not as much as, say, Robin and Starfire, who clearly have that connection and are main characters that you get to see developed in every single episode.
But I would certainly agree that as western fans of the anime style, we have the option (and/or responsibility) to apply that artistic stylization to the world that we actually experience, including the myriad of different races and types of people that you could run into on any street corner. So if you feel like you should branch out in that direction, by all means, go for it! Cool stuff could come of it.

I finally came up with an answer! Click if you dare, haha. Okay, just so you know, this whole conversation has proven EXTREMELY useful for me, about the racism thing and the obligation to represent in art who your main audience is. Thank you so much for being willing to discuss the hard, uneasy stuff with me. I really appreciate your frankness and genuineness---it really means a lot.
Also, it just occurred to me---Do you go to any comic or anime conventions? You know, with you being an Artemis x Wally supporter (I'm rooting for them too, by the way), you'd be a dead-ringer for Kid Flash. But the crazy KF fangirls we were talking about earlier---they might glomp at the convention, though, and you'd need super speed to get away from them, bwahahaha

Hey again, glad to that see you pursued your racial-expansion notion, and you seem to be really happy with the results, which is what really counts. Admittedly, I don't really understand the parallel between a deer and the African/American culture (maybe I'm just naive enough to think that the whole slavery interaction was a bit more complicated than an outright Predator/ Prey relationship?), but having a deer-based hero and a hunter-type hero on the same team could make for some interesting interaction. Especially if she's like, a staunch animal rights activist or something, lol. In any case, I hope you have fun with your project and that it works out how you'd like.
As for the convention thing, lol, you bring up a good point there. I actually already have my ticket reserved for this year's A-Kon in Dallas, but I don't really intend to cosplay. I don't have the skill, time, or resources to invest in creating a costume from scratch, though I might go with his civilian clothes and dye my hair extra red or something. Thing is, I did the same thing with Kyo from Fruits Basket a year or two back, and no one recognized me, since they were more familiar with his school uniform, I guess. Not to mention, I wouldn't say that YJ really fits the "anime" category to begin with, so I'm not sure that the con-goers would be the target audience to appreciate a YJ cosplay. =/
Similarly, I was never a true comics fan to begin with, so I wouldn't glean much from a comic con if I were to go. I just happen to enjoy this show and these characters that remind me of a more mature Teen Titans. It's a fun idea though, to be sure.

Lol, yeah, there is no relation to African American culture and deer, which is something that definitely crossed my mind. I though, ohhhh, is this going to be a problem, that deer + African American makes no sense? I mean, to be sure, black slavery in America is much more complicated than a predator-prey thing. But I'm going to defend my metaphor in that I don't want the superpower to define the person wielding it. A Native American who dresses up as a deer superhero probably makes more sense ... but that is a pretty nasty stereotype, too, to have Native Americans connected with deer and bison and that kind of thing. I will stress that in other ways, the predator/prey metaphor works for me---let's face it, deer have very little power compared to other animals, like wolves or bears, and likewise, Fawn is like a Batman or a Robin---super smart, but not a genetically enhanced metahuman by any means. And as for Mezzanine, the hunter thing works because he's from a small, up-North hick town---I mean, he has enhanced vision, so he's just a shoe-in for the rustic lumberjack/hunter stereotype. But ... well, let's just say there's a reason why he leaves the country for the city.
Thanks for bringing up those points, though. I'll definitely keep thinking about them as I move forward. I need to be sensitive about these kinds of issues, especially since I'm walking in dangerous territory.
Haha, you should totally do a casual Wally! Just buy a red Flash shirt from the store and layer a short-sleeve button-down over it! Well, regardless if you cosplay or not, I hope you have fun at the convention! I'm volunteering at my local anime con at the start of April, and I hope to go to the sci-fi con sometime in the summer. I've always had a really hard time finding people who are into cartoons and comics like I am (most of my friends just don't like it), so it'll be fun for me to meet some like-minded people at the cons.
