Description Studio assignment: To create an abstract model of the Singapore Zoo entrance plaza. See picture here: [link]

Le Corbusier once said, ‘Architecture is the learned game…of forms assembled in the light’. My abstract model explores the concept and effects of light in the zoo entrance architecture.

Sunlight filters through the timber screens, which are arranged in a rhythmic pattern. Yet the shadows formed appear dispersed and random, much like the shadows formed as sunlight permeates the forest canopy. The man-made, measurable structure thus creates the unpredictable, immeasurable illusion of nature.

My model reverses this order. The shadows are restricted to a regular format, but the forms are allowed free play. Hence the random-regular relationship is reinterpreted and abstracted, being distilled beyond the physical forms themselves.

At the same time, the described shadow of the model appears only at one lighting angle. If sunlight were used, it would correspond to a short timeframe when the shadow is formed. I use this effect to illustrate the temporal feel of the zoo entrance space. This is due to the modular nature of the design with the assemblage of various neat units.

Very nice. I really enjoy conceptual pieces such as this. In my opinion, conceptual art, backed by good craftsmanship, is the highest form of art.

I think you've done a good job here, drawing from vibes such as Escher was dealing with. Very well done!
