So after a TON of practicing, and looking at various images for reference, I finally managed to do a better version of my (eventual) novel's heroine. I also discovered GIMP and learned how to do layers and such (although proper shading continues to elude me). After finishing, my desire to buy myself a tablet only increased because doing all that with a mouse really REALLY sucked....
