Description A pic of Kaze I sketched up a while back. Pretty plain, I know, but it was an attempt to get used to her finalized costume and minor weapon re-design-- please forgive the shoddy BG. (I even shortened her hooded cloak for this one... she really only wears it for that good ol' "Death" effect.)

Crescent Death's weapon is called the SoulSickle, created by one of her Crescent predecesors (hope I spelled that right-- I'm sleepy darn you! ) to house the souls she collected during the Dark Ages, making the weapon very powerful and very evil. Kaze is learning new things about the SoulSickle every day, all the while fighting the evil within it as it is potentially powerful enough to consume her.

She has been known to switch forms of the weapon from a Sickle to a Sword and to a Kama (for easier portability). In Sickle form, it weighs 80 lbs! It can be used to create portals, is capable of projectile blasts, and is indestructible.

Crescent Death's arch-nemesis, Crescent Satana (also the creator of the weapon) will stop at nothing to regain possession of the SoulSickle... and she's patient enough to wait for the perfect chance to strike. Kaze must do everything in her power to keep the SoulSickle from falling into Satana's evil hands again, but rest assured, it won't be easy...

Crescent Death, Crescent Satana, and the SoulSickle are all copyrighted by yours truly.

I like the angle of the woman and the worm's eye view. Very dynamic.

Thank you! I've really been trying to improve on my angles, thanks to your advice on the Snoo Snoo pic!

np. It will get easier the more panels you make for scripts. It's hard to get into all the cropping and for-shortening if one isn't paneling anything. but Sometimes I cheat and rotate my pencil sketch when I'm inking in photoshop.

I wondered if I could get away with the same thing, but now that you've mentioned it...

I think I got the trick off of Free DA tutorials. I've improved 200% since reading all the tutorials I could get my hands on.

NICE! I like the motion in this one. Watch that left leg though. A lot of times if I don't have reference I use toys. Since most of us can't afford to have live models posing for us grabbing a nice posable action figure can help. They have models designed for artists but a figure with plenty of articulation works just fine. You can set up your poses before you start and see how things work, what looks awkward, and even choose angles and lighting. You should try it.

Now that I look at it again, I see where I went wrong with the left leg, I may have lost myself and tried to make it appear bent... I think it may look better if I draw the leg straight and point her left foot outward. Thank you so much for the great advice!

You always have such clean lines...what do you do to get your lines to come out like that? I saw you and discussing your lines and varying thicknesses and such with them...what is your technique? Do you ink them by hand first, then go over them digitally or is everything digital? I think my lines are rather weak and often they come out jagged and not fluid as I would like...yours are really cool!

Thank you, Marky! I have to do everything by hand because I'm not very skilled with digital inking-- tried and failed miserably, lol. My initial drawings are kind of sketchy with jagged lines, but I thicken them in pencil before I go over them with inks... I learned that style from P2K in the early 2000s. When I feel really confident, I just ink over the rough sketch, but that's not often.

Even the way I ink can be considered pretty crude-- For the finer lines (like in the face, on hands, and smaller details), I use Micron fine-tipped pens, .005 and .01 thickness. For the outlines of the subject, I use any regular felt tip pen (I hate gel ink) that can be found in drug stores or Walmart, usually medium to bold.

You're welcome babe! It amazes me just how good yours and many other folk's hand inked works come out so well. My hand inked stuff looks hand inked...yours is really clean and crisp, I wish I could get them like that with my digital program! Plus, I tend to like really thin lines...so that's probably why my stuff doesn't look as rich.

While I was at some store the other day, I noticed that they carry .09 mechanical pencils now, and that seems to be a easier way to make those bold lines, I thought. I usually draw with a .05 pencil, but use a lot of lead going over the outlines.

I love your work regardless, and as of late you have really been poppin' with it!

Yeah, I have seen the .09 mechanical pencils...I've always strayed away from them being that I prefer .03, but I've learned that .05 mm has been very helpful creating thicker lines and produces a different type of shading quality than the .03. Perhaps I'll go and pick up a .09 mm to help with the bolder lines...only thing is with the thicker leads, it's not as sharp looking as it is with the smaller leads.

Thanks for the tip, and thanks for loving my latest stuff!

There's a .03?! Goodness, I've never seen one of those! Where'd you score yours from?

Hey, we're in this together! When I see your awesomeness, it makes me want to step mine up, too! We got synergy, babeh! (That's how John Mayer says it, 'babeh' and 'bah-dy'! LOL)

Mr-Marcus-81 In reply to GirlGlycerine [2009-07-12 07:10:28 +0000 UTC]

Yes Ma'am...there sure is a .03 mm! I discovered it in an art store back home in Columbia a few years ago. Check this drawing that I did right after I got mine [link]

You can probably find some .03 pencils and lead at your store Sam Flax or if you happen to be in the Roswell Rd/Buckhead area you can go to Pearl Art Supply...I bought two of them there as well as the lead to go with it. (Those things are a bit pricey however!!! They're like $5/$6 bucks a piece! ) You can't find the .03 pencil at Michaels, Target, Wal Mart, or CVS...it's one of those specialty things. If you don't see it at Sam Flax, look for drafting/architecture supplies, as the ones that I've found were usually in the drafting section.

Hey...I'm with you if you're with me with the art thing! We do have synergy, babeh! Speaking of John Mayer...that dude is AWESOME!!! Did you see him do Human Nature at MJ's funeral?

Unfortunately, I didn't watch the funeral. Truth is, I really just couldn't. Really wasn't in the mood to cry, but I may watch it later after the reality of everything finally sets in.

I'll keep my eyes out for that pencil next time I go to Sam Flax, too. I like the detail you pulled off with it!

If nothing else and if you're a John Mayer fan, you've got to check out this amazing performance! [link] XqbIu9SZKo

And yeah...that .03 mechanical pencil is the bee's knees! I definitely recommend that you give it a try!

There's something excessively cool about sickles/scythes... her face looks great too. I like the pose and the details.

Something is a little off with the foreshortening on the forearm and hand holding the side handle, and the feet look like they're facing the same way, not opposing each other (her left foot--our right hand side--should be pointing slightly toward the center of her body, not outside).

Thank you muchly! There's just something about a staff with that menacing blade on it... so much potential for destruction!

Your critiques are on point, and thank you for bringing these to my attention, so I can step my game up in future works~!
