Description My bead-box (hold my beads, charms, claws and trinkets) went without an image on it for over a year now... if not more (two even?).
From the start I knew I wanted to carve Thunderbird on the top. Thing is, I never knew what design I wanted. So doing as I always do- I left it for *him* to tell *me* how he wanted to be carved.

Fast forward all that time, and just recently (last week) I was in need of some emotional comforting, and I asked for a sign that things would turn out OK.
That night, I had a dream:
I was carving this exact image onto my bead-box, all the while Thunderbird was talking to me- but of course, not in tongue. His mouth was moving and the sound of thundering rumbles mixed with a beautiful song was heard.

Next morning I woke up and knew that not only will things be OK, but that was the image intended for my box. And so I carved it, painted it, and inlayed a mother-of-pearl eye (oddly, not Abalone... but in the dream his eye was mother-of-pearl. I remembered noting that).

Is it Eagle looking over his shoulder as the sun rises/sets? Or is it the head of the mighty Thunderbird- Gift of the Sun?
Funny. Because -as always- every time I pray for some kind of answer, it's always eagle to bring me the answer on his wings.. and this time, was no different.

I do carvings like these as well. Note me for details and prices.

No prob! Also, I went to a shaman today...I've been looking for a close one and somehow one was really close to my work...So I went...And he says I'm a goat! Not a very ' pretty ' animal, but dependable and vercitial

This is a big challange for me, to work with the carving, use the space and the image to convey completeness and you've done an excellent job. Have you ever thought about doing some soap or sand stone carving? I think that you might do very gorgeous work. IMHO. this is beautiful.

Yes, I have thought about stone as well, but first I want to concur the wood. Then I will move on to stone.

Oooh, that's amazing. The whole thing looks very smooth, well-crafted. Great image, can't believe it was delivered to you in your dream. I don't know what they're called up where you live, but here any spirit, even when it appears in a dream are called manitowak. Like you said, sounds like a good sign for you. ;3

This makes me, for some reason, want to draw the Great White Deer. Hrrrmmm...

Manitowak.
Wow. I really like that term. Because in English, there are so few terms to describe supernatural and spiritual creatures.. I am writing this word down and using it. Manitowak. (what tongue is this spoken from?)
Thank you SO much for that bit of knowledge! I really appreicate it!

Mind you... care to share with me the story of the the Great White Deer? What band/culture/society it came form? I really am interested to know!

JamminBison In reply to Gishkishenh [2007-08-14 21:32:54 +0000 UTC]

It's Unami, but I think it's also shared with Munsee. Can't be sure...it's used to describe any living spirit that is controlled by the Creator (which is KishelΓ«mΓΉkΓ²nk over here. Delaware/Lenape language, still--dialects are confusing @_@).

Sacred White Deer or Great White Deer, depends, but I've heard the story a few ways. It's not a regular white/albino doe, but a buck with a huge rack. He's a reminder of the animals that give humans life to hunters since the deer was a major source of food, clothing, and other items way back when. The Sacred White Deer is supposed to be almost equvilant to the White Bison in the Plains. Old, old story that's shared between a lot of Algonquin, Lenape, and Renape supposedly, but don't hold me on that. He's real as any other deer but I've only seen white does around here. Maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to see him.

Aha, I feel like I'm telling you this without really knowing because I'm still learning about my Lenape culture. Feel bad about that, sorry! D:

Don't feel bad! We are all seekers as we all want to learn, and sharing just helps our knowledge expand!
I asked because I had a painting I wanted to do- and funny that the subject was a great white elk.

Oooh, can't wait to see the painting done! Should be wondeful.

I'm glad you share so much information on the culture up where you live. I don't know much about anything native outside of the Northeast, so it's neat to hear about from you. Keep up with that, I always love your descriptions on pictures. <3

Yes, it is one of the things I learned LONG ago- when it comes to art, better just wait for the right thing. Otherwise, the frustration of having a semi-well-done job will HAUNT you!

That is beautiful, is that opal for the eye? I have a raven box where the artist used opal for the eye as well. I love having inspirational dreams, but I lack the skill you have to capture it so beautufully. I would love to commision you for such a box or even do a trade if you like.I do drums, prayer feathers and medicine plaques

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Gishkishenh In reply to nebby [2007-08-14 20:54:20 +0000 UTC]

Hello!
No, the eye is actually Mother of pearl. I wanted Abalone, but they were too thick for the wood width, and I searched for Akoya, but all they had were buttons, no inlays.. but they certainly had a gorgeous Mother of pearl! And it's shape is so unique! It makes the illusion of an eye!

I currently would prefer a commission actually.. mainly for the fact that I am trying to make next months rent. I am truly greatful and honored by your enthusiasm as well!
