Description
After surviving a violent dropship crash on a distant world, a lone medic named Narumi is marooned and forced to rely on her resourcefulness and instincts to master living in a foreign and hostile environment.Having a talent with animals back on Earth, Narumi tames a local creature to help protect her from the violent beings that dwell here.

The composition on this is really good - how the girl and creature stand out against the light, and how the creature looms over her!
Also, the lighting effects themselves are well done - the shadows and rays of light, how the further up parts of the creature are more hazy.

Think of its intelligence as somewhat like a caveman. Unable to communicate very well verbally, but has good motor control and the capacity to understand kindness.
She has a talent with horses back home, so it's a similar friendship, but not really. It's a caveman/horse/gorilla mix.

I'd like to learn his secret. somehow, I think it has to do with OCDing on realistic lighting properties.

Heh, well even in such a basic form I like the gist of it anyway.
Gwaa, looking at the picture some more I just love all the light-play.... the shafts of light shooting under the creature's neck, and below its knee, and through the crook of its arm.... And I love how the extreme foreground.... cave anemone thingies.... are blurry. Ah, such lovely depth.

Yes, I went OCD on all the detail over the course of a year, and I think it paid off
Not saying it TOOK a year, just that I spaced it out over that time. When I started my skill level wasn't where it needed to be to get to this result. I took breaks and did other work to improve.

That is some beautiful lighting there. The plants look so translucent. Also, that depth in the foreground adds so much.

Yea, in previous drafts of the painting, the bio-luminescent barnacles (the blue lights) were much stronger too. This scene was really a lighting and material study.
