Description

At the behest of Sub-Zero, Sareena takes Jade aside for personal training in the art of cryomancy. This is an honor not freely given to any random member of the Lin Kuei. Sub-Zero learned this the hard way when he trained Frost, whose arrogance and bad temper got the better of her and almost cost Sub-Zero his life. Careful that he doesn’t let his feelings for Jade to get in the way, he thinks it would be right if Sareena shows Jade the first steps toward cryomancy.

Sareena opens up to Jade and confesses that she is a demon from the Netherealm that once served Quan Chi. She betrayed the evil sorcerer once she had met Sub-Zero’s brother, Bi-Han. Although Bi-Han eventually perished and became a lost soul and a devoted member of the Brotherhood of the Shadow, Sub-Zero offered Sareena refuge in the Lin Kuei and has become a devoted ally and protector of Earthrealm. Her demonic essence contained the lost souls of fallen Cryomancers, which allowed her to learn from Kuai Liang the ability to freeze. Sareena will see if Jade can harness the power of ice.

Jade concentrates and channels the spirits of Argus and Delia. After much time, it starts. Jade is shocked at how quickly it happens. The ice energy forming between her hands growing more and more. Sareena sees this and laughs. “Jade! You’re a natural!” Jade is in complete disbelief.

“How is this possible?” Jade asks Sareena.

Sareena responds, “Aren’t you an Edenian?” “I am,” Jade answers. “Which can only mean that the cryomancers are indeed Edenians. This was something I had learned a long time ago.”

Jade then asks Sareena, “may we show him? Please?”

Sareena smiles and nods enthusiastically before running out to find the Grandmaster.

As Jade contemplates her connection with cryomancy, Sareena returns with Grandmaster Sub-Zero following close behind. At his request, Jade performs her newfound ability to freeze. The Grandmaster is shocked at the sight of this.

“Jade…” Sub-Zero is still astonished at the sight of Jade conjuring ice, “it took years for me to harness the ability to freeze, and you are able to do it so quickly. How?”

“Grandmaster,” replied Jade, “what I have learned can only come from cryomancers. You once told me you are a descendant of both Earthrealmers and Outworlders. But if I can conjure ice, then you are not a descendant from Outworld, but from Edenia.”

Sub-Zero kneels and listens closely to Jade’s every word. “While I had served under Shao Kahn, I had heard rumours that the cryomancers were driven out from Edenia during Shao Kahn’s invasion and left to die in Outworld. Until Sareena showed me the ability to freeze, I only believed they were merely rumours. Grandmaster, you are part-Edenian. A descendant of the gods.”

Sub-Zero bows his head, with a single tear running down his face. Sareena rushes to comfort him. The Grandmaster gives a slight smile as he turns to look at Sareena. Then, he looks back at Jade. Humbled, Sub-Zero responds, “You were right, Jade. It appears we both had much to learn.” Jade smiles and kneels alongside Sub-Zero.
