Hmmm, looks just a bit like what we call 'tree asps' down here. Lots of venomous spines hidden under that hair. They are actually flannel moth caterpillars [link]
Don't know what this guy is, though. Maybe a different kind of flannel moth?

Yep. I was stooping down to take this pic and then I put my hand up on this railing to pull myself up. I said to my husband "wouldn't it have been awful if, when getting up, I would have accidentally put my hand over the caterpillar and squashed it?"

Well, I used to see a lot of wooly bears, caterpillars that are a cinnamon brown with a wide stripe of black in the middle. Haven't seen one in a long time. Don't know what kind this is. I thought this one was pretty cool looking. Probably some horrible kind that destroys everything in its path.
