Flick's POV
"Yams says 'I love you, please don't ride me today.'" Megan laughed as she slipped through the gap in the arena's gate. "Poor thing misses when she was but a 2 year old and her only thoughts were grass and sleep.. Mood."
I laughed Megan off as I began shifting the poles around for canter poles leading to a small jump. "Why does everyone here have to jump so big, do y'all know what I would do to have the correct jump height set before I came into the arena?"
"Hell all that means is that you have to start jumping bigger now, right?" Megan winked at me as she helped place jumps around the ring in a small course. "Sure Yams needs to grow up a bit but she would jump age classes next year! Not to mention Gemini is just sitting in a field when she could be going up the heights. Annnnd I'm sure Fox would let you ride Loui any time, not that he has a choice I suppose it is my horse. Or you could kick Alice into gear and help her start Shiloh, we backed him last year so he should be back in work by now."
"Hmm, so I have the option of the Ex-racing Thoroughbred who hasn't been riding regularly in a year, the stallion who would jump the arena fence if you rode it right, the barely broken 4 year old stallion or the safe and sweet Yamaguchi who won't kill me if I jump her? I think I'll choose life." I chuckle as I climb unceremoniously onto the mare and gather my reins.
It's crazy to think that I've only been properly riding a few years now but here I am, riding at one of Ireland's best stables and schooling their prodigy mare out of two Grand Prix horses. Who would've thought. I clucked Yams into a light trot and loosened my reins in order to allow her to stretch downwards, I wonder will I still get to ride her when Cas and Tiger return. I've been promised a ride on Dorian and Wally when they both get back though which is completely terrifying but I'm assuming I should be excited, riding my first successful Grand Prix horses under the instruction of Grand Prix riders.
I was snapped out of my thought after my third warm-up jump as Megan began speaking, "Okay I should really be giving a lesson right now but I'm hoping Alice took over because I want to watch you put her over the water tray."
I reluctantly nodded, pushing forward in the canter and taking up a half-seat. Is she fucking mental? The water tray is 1.10 wide, I hate spreads and Yams has never jumped this before, what isn't to love? In attempts to set aside my nerves I take her for a small canter circle, immediately riding off my corner and pushing through with my seat. Please god don't refuse. I click twice and close my eyes, likely holding on for dear life until I realize we are back into a floating canter at the other side of the jump and very much still alive. Scratching her neck we slow to a walk and regain whatever faint heartbeat I have left so we can cool off on a hack.
"Nice! See, you can bloody do the jumps rightly so stop being a wuss." Thank you Megan for the lovely words.
