Description
Tried a few different things with this one, only time will tell if I'm happy with it. It's Starling! He's a hero character I made and recently redesigned, here seen lounging at a friend's house on her weird furniture. He's a good boy and I love him.
Backstory wise: Starling used to be part of one of those teen hero groups. The group started as just a bunch of friends that one day got into a freak car accident with a 'mysterious object'. They were exposed to a strange chemical and gain their powers. They formed a hero team and called themselves 'The Wings of Justice', each member picking a bird as their name. Alice became Phoenix, the leader, and was known to be unstoppable. Beatrice became Raven, the heavy hitter. Dorothy became Wren, the brains of the operation. Ben became Blackbird, the speedster. And Theodore became Starling, the generalist; though not quiet as fast, strong, tough or sharp as the others he possessed enough of each ability to be able to fill in on any spot of the team should the need arise. (All members had a different mix of the following powers; super strength, super speed, quick thinking/perception, regeneration and general toughness.)
The Wings of Justice did good work for years, but everything came to an end the day that they found out the truth. Turns out that the accident that gave the team their powers was not an accident at all. Phoenix's father was revealed to be a mad scientist trying to create the ultimate being. He had planned to use his daughter as a guinea pig for his experiments but had not predicted her friends also being in the car. This ruined his calculations; when the serum as spread across the team they were each granted incredible power. When the same serum was applied to one man alone he became a monstrosity that called itself a god-king.
The team managed to stop Alice's father, barely. It was not without sacrifice as Blackbird was killed in the battle. After this the team fractured. Alice disappeared, unable to cope with both the betrayal of her father or the guilt of survival. Raven and Wren retired, moving in together and finding other careers. Only Starling was left, brokenhearted but unwilling to give up just yet.
Starling has remained a hero since then, always running to wherever he's needed.
Since his youth he has only gotten stronger and faster, his powers still developing. This is a double edged sword however; as he gets stronger he feels less and less human. Strange side effects started occurring. His right eye has been black since the original accident where they got their powers. His tongue became black a few years later and split into two long prehensile appendages, almost tentacle like. (He has since learned to always smile with his teeth clenched shut.) He finds now that he is always hungry, yet always full of energy. To stay still is a torture, one that has him feeling mad and shaking within only hours if he is not well enough exercised, yet the constant exorcise leaves him feeling empty and hollow in return.
Most disturbing of all is when he gets injured. His blood has become much more invested in returning to his body, stabbing its way back under his skin if he should get too close to what has been spilled. His wounds, if large enough, knit together through a writhing mass of black tentacles. Broken bones seem to pull themselves back together forcefully. Even Alice's regeneration hadn't been this terrifying as far as he can remember.
He's now as powerful as each of his friends had been in their specialties during their youth, but he is also terrified that he is slowly turning into the monster that their leader's father had become.
