Description

The Howling Commandos of the Omniverse were a unit that one might think was tailor made by fate to irritate the Nazis. Captain America, the team leader, was Jewish. The first man who joined him, William “B.J.” Blazkowicz was of Polish descent. On Steve’s first mission where he rescued his childhood James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes after he had been experimented on by HYDRA, he managed to rescue the only other man lucky enough to survive their experiments; Red Army soldier Alexi Shostakov.

The unit would go onto be a thorn in the side of the Nazis on both fronts. Red Skull reportedly once smashed a man’s car after one too many failed attempts to kill a squad being led by two Jews. His final confrontation with Steve Rogers would end with the Nazi emerging the victor and leaving Steve burried in ice and Bucky captured, but Steve’s ghost would still haunt Red Skull as Blazkowicz and Alexi, the latter now taking up the alias the Red Gaurdian, would lead the Howling Commandos for the rest of the war.

Red Guardian swore to avenge Rogers and despite his best efforts, Red Skull always eluded him. Not being able to claim his revenge meant the war ended on a bitter note for him and Blazkowicz, even as the Howling Commandos helped the Red Army take Berlin.

Blazkowicz detested the Nazis as much as anyone, but he had no love for the USSR invading his Eastern Europe. By the end of the war this meant he and Alexi didn’t part on the best of terms. Blazkowicz didn’t blame Alexi for the invasion, yet he still had a hard time staying friends with a man whose country pushed out one tyrant just to replace it with another. Alexi himself weeped at the injustice as even with his loyalty to his country he couldn’t possibly justify this land grab.

Seeing the alliance between the United States and Soviet Union end thanks to the two country’s irrevocable ideological differences, some part of Alexi and Blazkowicz couldn’t help but feel dying in the war was a mercy for Steve and Bucky. At least then they didn’t have to witness two former allies become sworn enemies and amass weapons of mass destruction to wipe the other from the face of the Earth. Or to see America go to such ruthless ends to expand its sphere of influence at the expense of lives in so many other countries.

After the end of the Cold War, Alexi would finally speak with Blazkowicz again. The comrades having not seen each other in years made them realize that whatever happened between the two countries, they could still be friends since having long since retired from service politics was no longer an issue.

Years later the two were elated to learn that Steve Rogers had returned. Having lost so many friends over the years, Steve was grateful to learn two of his old teammates were still alive. The two of them had changed over the years, and so had the rest of the world. Both men wondered where that left him.

“Guess I will learn about how the world changed. I have already heard about how friends became enemies, and how a lot that changed for the worse. But I have already heard about how a lot of things that changed for the better. Something that hasn’t changed for me is that what I did, and what I plan to do, was never about the governments that run our countries. I am and always will only be loyal to the dreams, the ideals and the people.”

Just thought of this idea where Red Guardian was a Soviet Captain America in WWII rather than a spy in the Cold War, and the heartbreak that incur from fighting alongside Steve just to see the USA and USSR become enemies. It’s hard to picture now but the propaganda during the war from both countries spoke of nothing but praise for the other. The USSR even made a poster celebrating the Allies liberation of Paris.

Blazkowicz is a hero who is used to a pretty black and white world. If there were no more Nazis to fight I feel like his view would start to change if he saw how much alike the USA and USSR were in the Cold War.

I did this to focus on introducing my versions of a couple characters but worry not I will write more entries with my all star team of Nazi hunters. I am already thinking of some ideas for Blazkowicz.

Things change for the better and for the worse. I felt like Steve Rogers would be a good character to comment on this as he starts learn how different things are, and that it's not a simple matter of everything being worse the way it can sometimes look.

I REALLY hope I am not marching into any uncomfortable territory by changing a character’s background in a way that relates to religion. I figured since Captain America’s creators were Jews I would make him Jewish in my verse. I feel that adds a more personal dynamic to him fighting Nazis and the Red Skull.
