Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The shadow knows. You achieved depth here, and the shadow looks really good. I like the concept, too.

I wanted to do something that is both subtle and frightening to people.

This is the human version of my OC Marlene Burger [link] I was fooling around with various where the menance was applied (One was someone entering a spartan room that seemed to design to trap a person in than keep something out), and decided against anything like that. I felt that it was too "real" or possible. I like my horror to be unreal, vampires, atomic mutants, or aliens where it is not possible, at least I hope it's not possible. I was toying with ideas like a child's plaything and child barricade themselves into a room or such. It was not working, it looked too distrubing, I wanted a hint of terror.
I am watching the Night Gallery, Rod Serling's follow up to the Twilight Zone, the concept Mr Serling is curator of the Night Galery. He introduces a painting that deals the story. One that I saw was "The Hand of Borgus Ween" where a man's right hand starts to act of its violation and plots to kill people. I thought I would like to do that, I could not do effective a hand possession picture in a single picture. Then I realized that the shadow would prefect, there was series the Shadow Knows in Mad Magazine by Sergio Aragones where the shadow of people would reveal their true intetions [link] I loved the idea just gelled so quickly. we have Marlene is doing a benign activity (setting a table) and unkwon to her, the shadow is reaching for a knife. The concept just give the shivers, how often do we watch our shadows.
The whole concept just almost popped into my head fully formed with Marlene's shadow attacking her. Where can she go to protect herself from her shadow? There is no lock or security system that would keep her shadow out of her. There is no place on Earth that her shadow can not follow her. The whole we can see what is happening, she is blissfully unaware of the menance. That the shadow is following the "rules" of shadow not standing up, it is thrown on the floor. It is hinted at the malice, is it some spirit seeking revenge or is it a part of Marlene trying to assert itself on her. Can the shadow grasp a real knife? I like the peril.

I really should have been more detailed in my initial comments.
It was late and I was beat when I first viewed it but I was really impressed with what i saw and I wanted to immediately acknowledge it. Commenting now more specifically
I like the sense of "classic" peril about the picture . To my mind the attacking shadow is a fun image coming from out of the old cartoons and especially the Sergio cartoons from Mad Magazine- mentioned in your response( as an aside I am very pleased to see that his comic " Sergio Aragones Funnies " is back in business) and because of this the danger inherent in the image( the shadow going for a that butcher knife when Marlene goes on about her business unaware of what is going on behind her back) is moderated . Even if the Shadow does fallow through and stab Marlene he will be stabbing her with a shadow knife which can do no damage . So the result will be that Marlene will see it as a joke or an annoyance or (worse of all ) not notice the attack at all.Which will just to serve to enrage /annoy /frustrate the shadow. And thus the immediate peril of the image is off-set by a little bit of observation and thought .I really like that your picture has the kind of content .
At least that is my take on your picture. I hope I am not off base in my observations and conclusions .
I appreciate all the back ground info you provided in your initial response( learning about your O C , your reference to the Night Gallery episode -really enjoy that series and every thing else Rod Serling has given us ) . I like and agree with your assessment of the potenial menace of malign shadows .
Thank you for this image . I hope my response does justice to it.

I think I watch the trailer, the film is like a dark horror film where dark forces are after a family's young son. So my impression for my picture was more horrific. The situation that Marlene's in could be played for laughs, which is based on a real condition. They were people who had head injuries and there left seemingly began to move of their own violation. The damage did something where people had lost of the control. In a test they would given a sack with small objects and ask to take out a red gold ball, then their other would continue to reach in and pull the other objects our. It could be played for laughs.
I decided to play more horror, you can see that malnovelent force threatening her harm. It is like the old Hitchcock gag about two men discussing baseball for a few minutes and a bomb goes off. It is better to show the audience the bomb and then the guys are talking baseball. The audience is screaming "don't talk about baseball. There is a bomb in the room." I wanted to leave the impression something wrong and we have a heads up.
In a comedy it could her shaodw has gained some sentinence like the more uninhibited side of her pseronality, it could be like desires that she does not express, like making a pass at the boy she likes. It could lead playful mechievious scenes with her only excuse is tha her shadow did it. Then she would sound totally insane. The shadow would want her to do things that she would never do like bungee jumping. It could be very funny as she watches in silent horror as her shadow goes about its deviltry.
The siyuation can be funny or horrific.

I did see the horror aspects of this image . But at the time I wrote my response I was in a frame of mind that wanted to concentrate on the "fun / comedy / cartoon aspect of the picture.I should have mentioned that aspect in my first comment ( sorry for that neglect).
I like the Hitch cock reference and think that concept ( the audience sees what the characters do not) works particularly well here.
I also like your ideas how the shadow would behave and the story would play out in a comedy leaning story.
Thank you again for another excellent picture.
