Speaking as a historian, it's actually not that far-fetched, in a way.
The Germans were using their "Sappenpanzer" or "Grabenpanzer" steel plate body armor as recently as WWI, and the Russians had their own "Stalnoi Nagrudnik" cuirasses in active use during WWII.
They were actually reasonably effective, with the tradeoff of being heavy and bulky - meaning they were primarily used by defenders such as machine gunners and snipers in positions such as trenches of pillboxes, but they were also useful in the close quarter fighting of urban combat. Obviously the best way to defeat an attack is to not get hit by it, but if you're in a situation where you're likely to be unable to reposition, you would welcome a bit of extra armoring.
