Description Date: 2007
Medium: Acrylics on card

c.380 million years ago (Frasnian, Late Devonian), The Kimberleys, Western Australia

At about 25 cm long, Moythomasia durgaringa is the largest of the five Gogo ray-finned fish species that we know of. It is one of the most common and easily recognisable vertebrate fossils in the region thanks to its large, porous scales and skull bones (the other Gogo actinopterygians pretty much look the same prior to preparation). This was clearly a very successful genus for its time as other species of Moythomasia are known from Germany, Latvia (where the type species comes from) and possibly New York State.

Yeah, I've always thought the fossils were grinning at me.
